Forrest Nathan Bedford Forrest Reinterment

I was at the reinterment also, but just haven't had time to put my thoughts into words since returning to Michigan. Will try to do so when I am at my old Kentucky homeplace next week. Here's a pic of me there. In an effort to represent my SCV Camp & my ancestors well, I bought a suit for the first time in my adult life; I was uncomfortable, but I think I did alright, lol.

I was able to get this from Mr. DeBarry when we at Shiloh this week. It will go into my NBF collection.

I'll call him tomorrow as he had 2 others. It will only be what he wants plus a 1/2 case Sam Adams handling fee. Do you have a brick?

Momma used to get onto me for being a beggar for candy when visiting relatives & church folks, but sometimes a kid can't help himself...

Since your friend had two left, and Viper is getting one, any chance you could snag the other for me (if it's not too late)?

Should've hollered ...! I would've wanted to meet you, had I known you were there.

I felt the same way when I saw in this thread that you were there! Funny thing is that I had a not-to-distant cousin that I'd never met who also attended; we share a common ancestor who served in Chapman's Battery, VA Light Artillery. Neither of us knew the other one was there until the day after. He called me on Sunday to tell me about being there and found that we were both still in the area, so we met up for dinner that night.

I had other friends who were there that I ran into while there not expecting to see them. It was a crazy neat day to say the least.

Lord willing there will be a next time. I'm hoping that this was my first of many national-level SCV events to come. I'm already starting to make plans to attend next years SCV Reunion, and would love to meet up if you go.

I think it's ridiculous that he wasn't reinterred in an actual cemetery. That's the only place casket burials should take place, especially reinternments.

I really wanted to attend the ceremonies, but with it being limited to only certain groups, I understood as to why they did it that way. Looking forward to hopefully soon visiting the site, along with the museum there at Elm Springs. It would be nice if they could somehow put the Forrest statue from his previous site in Memphis, there on the grounds as well, just as a nice little added touch to it all.

A.P. Hill will most likely be reinterred in Culpepper in the not so distant future.

I understand that is the plan

Give em time.... That's an expensive endeavor.

Whatever you think is fine.

However, can you provide the name of any public cemetery that offered to accept this couple ?
Since they passed-on over one hundred years ago, both have now been "dug-up" twice and hopefully been reinterred for the third and final time.

Elm Springs, Tennessee is the perfect location !
That's the only place casket burials should take place,

????

I would like to understand your reasoning ...

Elaborate funerals with very expensive caskets take place daily in many private family plots throughout the Southern States.

I'm honestly not trying to start a debate, but again only asking how you came to such a conclusion.

An "actual" cemetery? Who decides what that is? According to Merriam-Webster, a cemetery is defined as "a burial ground." Based on that definition, an "actual" cemetery is wherever someone is buried.

Have you ever been to Elm Springs? If you have, then you know it was the home of the Looney-Todd family. On the property, several yards from the new Forrest plot, is the Looney-Todd Cemetery. That original family plot started with one grave and eventually became the family cemetery with a rock wall around it.

The SCV purchased the Elm Springs property in the late 1980s or very early 1990s. In 1994, just outside the rock boundary of the Looney-Todd cemetery, a new grave was established when the remains of Simeon Cummings were interred. Simeon was a sailor aboard the CSS Alabama during the war; while docked in South Africa for fuel & supplies, Simeon died in a hunting accident. Originally buried there near the South African coast, his remains were brought back to the States and buried at Elm Springs.

Now, a short distance from the Looney-Todd cemetery & Cummings plot, rest the remains of Gen. & Mrs. Forrest. In this picture that I took on Monday, September 20th, is the fresh grave of the General. In the background you can see the simple gov't-issued headstone of Cummings, the Looney-Todd plot beside it and the National Confederate Museum beyond that.

I suppose that as individuals we are all free to determine for ourselves what we consider to be an "actual" cemetery, but by definition this portion of the Elm Springs property is exactly that. I think it's ridiculous to argue otherwise.

Would love to be there if possible, but if it takes place this calendar year that's unlikely. I used the last of my personal days at work for the year to attend the Forrest reburial.

My last two weeks of vacation for the year are coming up... any chance it will take place next week or the week after?

I'd say zero chance it happens that quick.

Reality is, until it becomes official, there's too many variables involved. Who's to say the family won't have a private service..? There's no guarantee that it'll be a public event, or even an invite only event like NBF's was.

I forgot to add:

You looked fine @JonnyReb_In_MI !

I don't care for suits either ( I had to wear many suits to work back in the day ).
When "casual Friday" attire became the norm during the late 1990's, I was the happiest guy in my office.

But I will say ... every man needs to own at least one well tailored suit.
One doesn't know when they might need such !

Rent a tux, but buy a nice suit.
And don't buy one off the rack in a store.

Make sure you are properly measured. Then the suit you choose be a great fit.
Alterations work wonders !

Think "what would NBF do? "
Forrest did like his full dress uniforms .

:smoke:

Sorry to get off topic !
