A friend is researching an ancestor in the 60AL captured at Chickamauga and sent to Camp Owens, Pulaski Co, KY. The only information we have about the camp is a vague reference to being close to the Cumberland River. Does anyone have any knowledge to share about Camp Owens and its location? Thanks.

It seems clear from all the references I found that it was in Pulaski County but the actual location seems to be a mystery. Most things say "undetermined location." But.... we can still hunt a bit!

This regimental history of the First KY Cavalry, published 1894, says the camp was on "the north side of the Cumberland River." Later the writer says they were "ordered to Somerset and went into camp at Sam Owens', between that place and the river." It that a description of Camp Owens? Somerset is north of the Cumberland in Pulaski County.

I haven't been to Somerset in a long, long time so my memory is a bit hazy.

Thanks everyone for help. My great-great-grandfather Benjamin D Jackson was captured at Chickamauga and ended up in Camp Owens. I'll search the area between the river and Somerset. He married my gggrandmother in 1864 in Somerset, which is the reason I've been able to trace him. He and three Jackson brothers joined Hilliard's Legend in Montgomery in '62. His brothers fought straight through; were there when they ran the white flag between the lines at Appomattox. Old Ben seems to be have been chilling in Kentucky with his child bride.
