Hello everyone, I am trying to figure out where the 5th South Carolina infantry was between Fredericksburg in December of 1862 and Suffolk in April of 1863? My gggg grandfather joined the 5th in July of 1862 and then was admitted to episcopal church hospital March 9 1863 and discharged March 12. The records show he then died in blackwater in Mathews county va. On March 21 1863? Trying to figure out what happened to him. Any help would be appreciated

The 5th South Carolina Infantry was part of Jenkin's Bde, Pickett's Div., First (Longstreet's) Corps from October 1862 to March-April 1863 : in mid-February 1863, both Pickett's and Hood's divisions (under the command of Longstreet) were first detached to Richmond, then sent to Suffolk in order to repel the Union threat in Southern Virginia and North Carolina.

Jenkins' Brigade switched temporarily from Pickett's Div. to French's Div. during Longstreet's campaign against Suffolk (sometimes known as "Tidewater operations"). French's Div. was composed of Davis' Mississippi Bde and Jenkins' Bde and was later identified as "Dept. Southern Virginia", when Longstreet's command was split in April 1, 1863. If your ancester died in late March, then he may have participated in early fight and siege operations against Union forces near Suffolk.

Welcome from Soldiers Who Fought on Horseback Cavalry forum.
Blackwater is a river in the Suffolk area. Matthews county is at the tip of a peninsula and on the north bank of the James river. Suffolk is South of the James.
