Had a little taste of Winchester yesterday on two wheels. A couple buddies & I, rode up there & took in a few sites. We certainly didn't see it all, & will definitely be back. I left my house at 9:00 am, & got back home at 9:00 pm.

After lunch (50/50 Tap House), we walked across the street to George Washington's Office:

The $5 spent to enter the office was money well spent. I was blown away how much of the original structure was intact, including the flooring that we walked on. Was pretty amazing. I could kick myself for not taking more pictures of the place but, I was just captivated by it, & focused on seeing, it all.

After walking some of George Washington's previous steps, we rolled down to Stonewall Jackson's HQ (The Moore House).

While in the home, I actually had the thought to take some pics, & was quickly told, photography wasn't allowed. I'll say this, they have some amazing artifacts in this home. They have some original flags, some furniture of Jackson's, some uniforms, various weapons, etc. I was pretty impressed with their displays. It was way more than I was expecting.

Honestly, it was so cool that, it screwed our day up, as we spent too much time there...lol. We didn't have time to hit the museum, although we did make a stop at the Cemetery (Hebron).

I did take a few pics here. Although, I believe I could've spent an entire day, just in the Confederate section of this cemetery.

I believe one could easily spend a couple days in Winchester, & still not see everything worth seeing. We spent an afternoon, & didn't even come close to seeing it all. Was a great day, & will most likely be followed up with another trip. Highly recommend it to anyone even remotely considering the destination.

While not Civil War related, if you are a fan of good Country music; Patsy Cline is buried there. And you are certainly correct, Winchester is a must see for anyone interested in the Civil War.
I am aware. I can't stand Patsy Cline...lol. I realize I'm in the minority on that subject but, I can't get her song, "Crazy" out of my head from years ago....

Another tid bit of info, inside Jackson's HQ, there is a room upstairs with this awful wall paper...lol. It looks like oak leafs, & branches. Well, it's a reproduction of the original wall paper in the home from when it was completed. Mary Tyler Moore actually paid to have it reproduced, & wall papered. She was a descendant of Col Moore's. <--- owner of the house when Jackson stayed there.

I always knew that I liked her for some reason.

Having this morning's coffee from the cup I bought at Jackson's HQ. They had a decent gift shop inside. Lots of items, & fair pricing. For reference, this cup was $6. If I wasn't on my bike, I would've bought a sword. They had some nice repo cavalry swords for $79. They also had some local dug artifacts for sale. Besides buttons, & bullets, they had a couple of bayonets.

I’m so glad you got into the house. I was there two-years-ago and was there when the time stated they were open, etc and the three of us waited and waited and they never opened for the day! So I went to the Courthouse and showed them!!!!:D But I specifically wanted to see the Jackson House so it was very frustrating. I was so hoping you could show pictures of it!

Bummer you couldn't see it. I was really impressed with it. They've really put a lot of effort into it.

We wanted to take pics. We were asked not to. Normally, as "Rebels", we do what we want...lol. However, in this scenario, the ladies were too kind to wanna ruffle their feathers

We will be near there for the Antietam Muster in October. Can you post a list of things to see there? I have some time on Monday before heading south. I knew about the Jackson House and Museum and the Cemetery. I was not sure about anything else.
Thanks for the great pictures!
George Washington's Office is worth seeing too

I'll bet your coffee tasted better?

Mrs. Jackson quotes from a Stonewall Jackson letter:
"...The situation is beautiful. The building is of a cottage style and contains six rooms. I have two rooms, one above the other. My lower room, or office, has matting on the floor. a large fine table, six chairs and a piano. The walls are papered with elegant gilt paper. I don't remember to have seen more beautiful papering......."

According to our guide: Jackson stayed at the Moore House four months. Once it was confirmed, he sent for his wife. She said it took three weeks for her to arrive from Lexington. So, Mary Jackson was there three months.

An interesting tid bit from the tour: On Sundays, Jackson would attend every church service he could. There were multiple denominations in town, & he would attend all that he could. Once in a pew, he looked as if he was sleeping. His chin all but touching his chest. People would approach him throughout the week, & ask him how was the Presbyterian service..? How was the Lutheran service ? How was the Methodist service, etc... As if they believed he slept through it. Jackson would then proceed to quote the Pastors

I get the impression, from what I know about Jackson, that he wasn't even close to sleeping. He was memorizing. He was known for the same at VMI (memorizing entire lesson plans). It's my understanding that if interrupted, he would start from the beginning again.

Who would dare to desiccate this or any other Confederate cemeteries or the monuments on those grounds? They may remove the statutes but dare not disturb this or any other Confederate soldiers final resting place. Inquiry; Who were the Ashby brothers and as to the Patton brothers and George Patton, any relation to OL Blood and Guts George Patton of WWII ?

You wouldn't want them to get moldy, would you?

The Confederate George Patton was the grandfather of the WW2 George Patton.

Turner Ashby commanded Stonewall's cavalry in the valley until being killed in combat during Jackson's famous 1862 campaign.

Same here!
We had been up to Harpers Ferry and were back in Winchester half an hour before they officially closed. What we did not know was that you can only enter with a tour and the last tour had just started, so we stood at the door and were immensely frustrated!!

@Viper21 looking at that fabulous coffee cup I'm now doubly frustrated that I never made it into the house! Great buy!!
