Pvt. John Ferdinand Porter, entered Confederate service in May 1862 in Brookhaven, MS. He was captured and sent to a prison camp and released after the war ended. He was my G-G-Grandfather.

While looking through the closet of my parents house, I came across John Porter's cane that he monogrammed and dated - 1926....He died in 1927.

I was given this cane to continue to keep in the family. I was told this cane was made by him.
I'm pleased to have this momento from my relative that fought in the civil war.

As you didn't mention his unit, I went to civilwardata.com and found a record for him. He was in Company C of the MS 2nd Partisan Rangers Cavalry (also known as Ballentine's Cavalry Regiment, named for the Colonel of the regiment, John Goff Ballentine). CWdata lists 1,208 individuals who served this unit, plus quite a few pages of the locations and events of each Company throughout the war.

I think you should also list your info on the photos page, as there are probably very few identified pics of uniforms this unit wore.

Thanks...He was captured near Natchez and sent to a prison camp up north. Something happened to his eye during his war years. My grandmother had told me that he always had to use his fingers to open and shut his eye lid. This injury was attributed to the war. And she said he got so hungry, that at times he would chew on his shoe leather. His partisan activities were centered around the surrounding counties where his home was.
