James Keith "Jimmy" Marshall, was the son of Chief Justice John Marshall's youngest boy. He was a VMI grad, and commanded the 52nd NC in Pettigrews' brigade. He commanded the brigade in Pickett's charge where he was knocked from his horse by the explosion of a shell, but commanded his men to help him mount back up. As they came up to the Emmittsburg Road, which crossed their path, a hail of shot, shell, and bullets struck, and Jimmy shouted to one of his officers nearby above the deafening noise :“We do not know which of us will be the next to fall!” He was supposedly shot dead shortly after.
His camp servant combed the battlefield afterward, but failed to identify his remains.
Maj. Benjamin Watkins Leigh, Jr. (1831-1863) was a step-son of Col. Jimmy's first cousin. He was a staff officer with Johnson's division, killed while trying to rally the 4th VA on Culp's Hill, July 3. The Colonel of the 7th Ohio wrote, “At the time the white flag was raised, a mounted rebel officer… was seen to come forward and endeavor to stop the surrender, when he was fired upon by my men and instantly killed.”
Col. Jimmy's first cousin Claudia's husband was Col. Hilary P. Jones, who commanded the artillery of Ewell's 2nd Corps at Gettysburg.
Another cousin of Jimmy's was Charles Marshall:
Col. Charles Marshall, the aide-de-camp of Gen. Lee. He was the son-in-law of Union army Paymaster General Timothy Andrews. Col Marshall's 2nd Cousin Pattie (DuKe) Buford, was wife of Gen. John Buford, commanding the 1st Division of Cavalry of the Army of the Potomac at Gettysburg. Gen. Buford's brother-in-law Basil Duke was a Confederate cavalry general...
If I were to hazard a guess, a great part of Lee's army were related to each other in some manner... particularly those Virginians!...and with a good number of fellows in Meade's army too.
