I thought with the Anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg coming up next week we could post our ancestor who fought at the Battle of Gettysburg. Mine was Private Francis Marion Peters. Private Peters was with Company H 11th Georgia Infantry Regiment. on July 2nd at the Battle of Gettysburg he was wounded in the foot. Private Peters went on to fight until the surrender at Appomattox Virginia. He then walked home to Georgia. Private Peters was my great great uncle. Now I invite you to share your ancestor who was part of one of the biggest battles of the Civil War.

James Keith "Jimmy" Marshall, was the son of Chief Justice John Marshall's youngest boy. He was a VMI grad, and commanded the 52nd NC in Pettigrews' brigade. He commanded the brigade in Pickett's charge where he was knocked from his horse by the explosion of a shell, but commanded his men to help him mount back up. As they came up to the Emmittsburg Road, which crossed their path, a hail of shot, shell, and bullets struck, and Jimmy shouted to one of his officers nearby above the deafening noise :“We do not know which of us will be the next to fall!” He was supposedly shot dead shortly after.
His camp servant combed the battlefield afterward, but failed to identify his remains.

Maj. Benjamin Watkins Leigh, Jr. (1831-1863) was a step-son of Col. Jimmy's first cousin. He was a staff officer with Johnson's division, killed while trying to rally the 4th VA on Culp's Hill, July 3. The Colonel of the 7th Ohio wrote, “At the time the white flag was raised, a mounted rebel officer… was seen to come forward and endeavor to stop the surrender, when he was fired upon by my men and instantly killed.”

Col. Jimmy's first cousin Claudia's husband was Col. Hilary P. Jones, who commanded the artillery of Ewell's 2nd Corps at Gettysburg.

Another cousin of Jimmy's was Charles Marshall:

Col. Charles Marshall, the aide-de-camp of Gen. Lee. He was the son-in-law of Union army Paymaster General Timothy Andrews. Col Marshall's 2nd Cousin Pattie (DuKe) Buford, was wife of Gen. John Buford, commanding the 1st Division of Cavalry of the Army of the Potomac at Gettysburg. Gen. Buford's brother-in-law Basil Duke was a Confederate cavalry general...

If I were to hazard a guess, a great part of Lee's army were related to each other in some manner... particularly those Virginians!...and with a good number of fellows in Meade's army too.

J. Marshall,
Hernando, FL

I have a picture of my ancestor, but I don't know how to post it to an Internet thread.
Do you have access to a scanner/printer or the ability to scan anything? (You have to put it in digital format before you can do anything with it.) If so, I or somebody else can talk you through how to post it.

I would like to share a photo of my husband’s great-grandfather, John Mason Bresee. So many of you have kindly assisted me with ideas on restoring his kepi. John enlisted for service in Juniata County, Mifflintown, Pennsylvania on July 25, 1861 at the age of nineteen. He served as a private with the 1st Cavalry Regiment of Pennsylvania, Company A. John fought with others at the Battle of Gettysburg from July 1, 1863 through July 3, 1863. Although he was involved in a number of battles during his enlistment, it appears that he was never injured. He mustered out on September 9, 1864, went on to attend medical school, and then served as a physician in his hometown of Academia, Pennsylvania.

Oh Brother, so much for a friendly sense of humor. I forgot this generation is so sensitive. Guess you have to be a real Veteran to make wise cracks and understand back it's all good natured and no hard feelings. :smile coffee:

My gr - gr granduncle, Henry Schildt, of the 6th Wisconsin. He was a sergeant at the time of Gettysburg. He was seriously wounded on the first day during the 6th's charge at the Railroad Cut. He was sent to the Federal Hospital in York, Pa and was out of action for over a year. He returned in August, 1864 being promoted to the captain of Co. F.

I have seen that hospital and it still stands as it was. There were wood covers on the outside that were opened when the weather was good to let fresh air in. This I am told the Doctor in charge believed fresh air would lead to a quicker recovery of the wounded. And it was a good discovery that worked.

My Grandfather, Private John Nelson Hubbard, Co. A, 7th Indiana Infantry Regiment, on Culp's Hill, Gettysburg 2 July 1913.
He is just to the right of 7th monument, wearing a white shirt, no coat, narrow tie and with left arm bent and left hand on leg.
Included is a photo of DeWitt Clinton McAdams who saved my Grandfather's life at Gettysburg. Clint was killed at Laurel Hill on 8 May 1864.
