Dr. Carson was appointed at the organization of the regiment in 1861. At the re-organization in 1862, he apparently resigned or was not re-appointed. There are only 6 cards in his file at Fold3. Realy no need to download the file, if someone could look at the cards and determine the reason for his resignation. It would be much appreciated.

There are a lot more records than 6. Look in the Confederate Officers files (in the same place as the various states are found). He died Nov. 19, 1861 and there are some 27 documents in his file.

Samuel M. Carson, who served as an Assistant Surgeon in the 19th TN, was born October 19, 1834. His father was Joseph Carson.

Samuel is listed as a student at the University of Virginia during the years 1853, 1854, and 1855, where his residence is listed as Abingdon, VA. He graduated from Jefferson Medical College in 1858, where he is listed as a resident of TN. As mentioned above, carded records (filed under Confederate Officers) indicate he was originally appointed Assistant Regimental Surgeon of the 19th TN on September 11, 1862 and he died November 19, 1861. So his official term of service as Asst Surgeon was 2 months 9 days. Joseph Carson, his father and administrator of his estate, collected his pay in arrears of $253.

In September of 1861, a "Return for Forage" indicates he received forage for 1 horse at Camp Cumberland for September 9-16, 1861 so it is likely that his enlistment began prior to the September 11 date reported on his final pay voucher. On the affidavit for collection of the back pay, the residence of his administrator Joseph Carson, is recorded as Abingdon, Washington County, Virginia. The affidavit claims as follows:

...Joseph Carson, who after being sworn according to law, deposes and says that he is the Father of Samuel M. Carson deceased, who was a Asst Surgeon of the 19th Regiment of Tennessee Volunteers, commanded by Colonel David Cummings, in the service of the Confederate States in the present war with the United States; that the said Asst Surgeon S. M. Carson entered the service at Jonesborough in Washington County and State of Tennessee on or about the 15th day of August 1861 and died on the 20th day of Nov. 1861 of disease contracted whilst in service under Brig Gen Zollicoffer leaving neither wife or child.....
