I just bought MMP's GCACW Atlanta is Ours and I have some questions!

Man, it looks so good! Cannot wait to play this...my first foray into the west with GCACW...I need to get the Battle above the Clouds next...anyways,
I also downloaded the Rules 1.4. from the MMP page. I noticed Atlanta comes with 1.3. 1.4 includes Atlanta in it. Now, if I have this right, these are the new and same rules now for all games but any game specific rules are in blue?
Also, is it necessary to buy the updated games like Roads to Gettysburg or can I just use the new rules and charts? How different are the rewrites and are they worth the rather large cost? Thank you in advance for any help.
 
To the best of my knowledge, the rules you can get from the website are the latest version of the rules, with the following exceptions:

The rules on the website do not include the "Hills" terrain (and possibly others). If your game has the "Hills" terrain you will need to follow the ruleset included with the game for that purpose.
Anything specific to the game (e.g. supply rules for Atlanta etc.) is included with the game.


In addition, there is a Vassal module for each game. It does not include many of the game specific rules in it - for example, for the On To Richmond game the vassal module includes the board, tokens and start positions but does not include the random events table, or rules like how to embark/disembark.

The Roads To Gettysburg II Vassal module includes most of the charts and tables, but does not explain how to use them (the arrival tables for the Army of the Potomac are included but it does not explain how you place the AotP; it has the random events table but no explanation what "Stuart" means on that table).
 
You may also be amused to know that the following maps line up:


Atlanta Is Ours lines up with Battle Above the Clouds, and you could theoretically run a single massive campaign across all of the relevant boards.

Roads to Gettysburg connects with Here Come The Rebels, which connects with Stonewall Jackson's Way and Stonewall In the Valley. SJW then connects with Grant Takes Command and that connects with On To Richmond.

I have actually done the latter. It's a gloriously massive combined file and the map goes from Harrisburg to Yorktown.

The most reliable way to get answers for any questions is to go to Consimworld, register to post on forums, and ask any questions in the GCACW forum. Everybody over there is very helpful.

Yes, I did line up the RTG maps...I just had to have a look! Same with the Atlanta full campaign. Things I would love to play but the time is just amazing...Where would I keep it? When class starts in August, I am pretty much done again. Hence, I am usually limited to smaller scenariors.

This is one reason why Vassal is useful. You can use that as a save to record the state of play, even if you don't play on Vassal itself.

I have got to venture into this VASSAL thing....the computer idea freaks me out! Must get into this century one way or another.

Vassal itself is a program that plays modules. It's fairly simple to set up.

The modules are downloaded from the vassal website. All the pages for the GCACW modules are linked here:

And if you've installed the Vassal program, then opening a downloaded module should default to there.

I'll wager there's nothing you ask that won't be answered. A lot of input from experienced GCACW players, play-testers, and even designer/developer. I see Ed Beach put up something himself on Friday. As you know, every design will turn out issues that the designer/developer couldn't foresee, and that's the place to get the information. Hood Strikes North just started shipping, so it's pretty active.

I just spent some time there and registered. I am not sure how I feel about it. It is big, rambling, and not easy to learn to navigate. Definitely made by wargamers!

It's actually pretty easy if you go to "forum" at the top and, on the drop downs, click on "Era Gunpowder: American Civil War", and then click on "Great Campaigns of the American Civil War". Stick with it - lots of good information and, as I indicated, you should feel free to ask anything.

I play GCACW series and the maps are works of art. Funny, they are better then any maps the generals had during the war.
Yes, rules1.4 are the updated rules and covers all the past and current games. It tells you when and what games/ senerios use the original rules as written ( as in Stonewalls last battle and Stonewall in the valley, some rules are used as is)

If you are a fan of the GCACW series, I would recommend Roads to Gettysburg II as it has the updated Here Comes the Rebels and Rebels In the Whitehouse.

Me and my son are playing Hood Strikes North now. He acts like Hood, loves his assaults even if they are losing battles. Though he is learning now the art of flanking and avoiding bloodbaths!

I've been doing some playthroughs as community games where both sides have the base map and information about their own strengths, but can only know about the enemy through scouting reports from their cavalry. It led to a fun Maryland Campaign so far!

It is true about the maps. I just bought Atlanta is ours, my first "western" campaign game.
 
Heh, I also used the maps to show the events of the Loudoun Valley campaign day by day. I kind of hope that they redo the On To Richmond map, though, that one's kind of elderly.
The combined Grant Takes Command and On To Richmond is the next one to be released. The OTR map was painted by someone other than Charlie Kibler, and on top of that, the green tints were different than all the other games in the series.
