I just purchased this image from an estate sale. I don't really know why I bought it --- I just liked it. I'm not sure if it was the gauntlets or the hat or the buttons on the jacket that look like they are covered in black cloth? He's very handsome. Maybe that was what drew me to the image? Anyway, I'm just wondering what, if any, information our uniform experts can provide. @ucvrelics @Package4 @major bill @chubachus @7thWisconsin or anyone else -- got any info? Is he military? or a civilian?

Thanks in advance for any help anyone can provide.

Great CDV! What does it say there on the bottom and is there anything on the back?

It looks like there´s a ¨3¨ on his hat, and the ht cord is sending some very officer-like vibes. The gauntlets are also saying ¨officer¨ to me as well. The lack of rank, and the dark buttons suggest chaplain to me. He looks old enough to be an ordained clergyman. I´ve rarely or never seen a photo of a chaplain where he´s wearing the uniform in a completely regulation manner, so the hat decoration isn´t out of character for the branch. I´d say this is a beginning of his military ministry picture, if he is a chaplain. Look at how stiffly the broadcloth on his frock lays. When he stands up, I think it´s going to be long on him. I´m gonna cautiously advance that this is a Federal regimental chaplain.

He is a handsome fella! @lelliott19 do you mind telling where you bought the card? If it was an estate sale that may help link a history to the subject of the photo (unless the estate belonged to a collector in which case it could be wholly unrelated to the place).

It was an estate sale of a collector so Im pretty sure the location has nothing to do with the actual image, but the estate was near Knoxville, TN

So, have you received this CDV and is there discerning evidence of who this might be and where it was taken? Inquiring minds “need” to know!

I don't want to get your hopes up - and the overall impression doesn't support the idea anyway - BUT... Covering brass military buttons with cloth was one way former Confederates dealt with the draconian Reconstruction edict that forbade the open "display" of CS insignia, etc. (Another was to simply remove or replace them with civilian buttons.)

Thanks! I don't have it in my possession yet, so don't know if there is a backmark. Here is an enhanced enlargement of the imprint at the bottom.

In my experience with CDV's a photographer's imprint on the face of the card means that there's likely NO backmark, like on the examples from my collection below, all of which have blank backs:

Civillian CDV's 011.jpg

Union Officer CDV's 003.jpg

His hat looks like it has a number on the front, maybe a "5" and the hat cord says officer. The hat itself looks like a Hardee Hat or some variation of one. The buttons look thin, but that might be the angle of the shot.

Does the black over the brass buttons indicate the person had attended a funeral?

...or "J. H. Crittenden" of New Bedford, MA

The word below the name looks like Artist.

So, putting this together, if in fact this is the photographers stamp and the number on the front of the hat is a 5, this could be Chaplain Snow of the 5th MA Inf., his sword was recently sold by the Horse Soldier: https://www.horsesoldier.com/products/29106.

Now if it is a 3, we need to search a bit more, as that was a 9 month Regiment; I did find an officer from the 3rd with a hat and numeral very close to our subject's hat and numeral:

below are two Chaplains from the Irish brigade (seated) Father Dillon and Father Corby, note the black frock, covered black buttons and the broad brimmed hats

The handsome Yankee just arrived, along with some other images purchased from the same estate sale. Here's what I hope is a better picture

Yep. Good eye! The imprint is "J. H. Crittenden / ARTIST"

Good eye! Yes, the number on his hat is a 5.... or maybe a 3?

And, as James N. speculated, there is no backmark.

Found it, the Chaplain of the 3rd Mass Infantry was Charles Snow from falls River, since there was also a Snow as Chaplain of the 5th, perhaps this was a family calling?
