Currently I am researching for a book about Zouaves (in German language), not only the Zouaves of the Civil War, but Zouaves in Europe too. With the text inching towards completition, I need photos of reenactors of Zouave regiments, Union Zouave regiments and Confederates are both needed.
The book will be part of a series by a German publisher. They have already done other books featuring renactors and the reviews are generally good. can anybody help me? Thanks in advance!

I forgot to say: every photographer would be properly credited and get a free copy of the said book. Photographs must be eligible for print (high resolution).

Wheat's Louisiana Tigers in the ANV wore Zouave uniforms. The attached reenactment photo of two of them may not be high resolution, but gives you another path to explore.

Well I got one old one from around 2008 of some on the march in a column with other troops:

Unfortunately besides a super-mega-ultra farby unit that portrays the Louisiana Tigers with the proper striped trousers, SUPER incorrect butternut Zouave jackets, with cheap "hawkin" guns and so-called Zouave rifles there ain't any Zouave units in my neck of the woods at events.

Funny story, just the other day a friend of mine I'm making a Confederate jacket for asked if I'd want to make a Zouave uniform for him. I told him the jacket and sash shouldn't be too hard to put together, but that I'd be terrified of trying to make those "d*mned baggy trousers!" as I told him. He had suggested it to do something different Union wise to show to school kids at reenactments. Bad part is he like an Zouave uniform for him and a Vivandiere uniform for his wife, which I told him he'd need to look elsewhere for her.

I'll look for more photos in my "archives" and see if I can enhance. I doubt be anything that could be used, but I like to try helping out any way I can.

James N. you have any Zouave photos?
Although these photos from the first day of the 135th Gettysburg anniversary reenactment show members of the 14th Brooklyn who were properly chasseurs rather than true Zouaves, as the saying goes, "most people wouldn't know the difference!"

However, these two fellows photographed two days later during Pickett's Charge appear to be the real thing, though I have NO idea what unit they belonged to or were trying to represent. Maybe the 5th N.Y. from the yellow tassels on their fezzes??

I believe the fellows above photographed on the set of Glory were likely members of the 5th N.Y. since both Dale Fetzer and Brian Pohanka were members also. A few of them appear in the background of a scene on the beach at Battery Wagner where there actually was a Zouave regiment involved but I have no idea which one or what their particular uniforms looked like. The "fellow" below is neither "real" nor a reenactor, but rather an NPS mannikin at the Brawner Farm Visitor Center on the field of Second Manassas where both the 5th and 10th New York were slaughtered in Longstreet's Assault.

Presumably THIS wasn't exactly what you had in mind, but here it is anyway - late Spring of 1977 at Yellow Bayou, Louisiana. These were a bunch of farbs - but then most reenactors were, including Yours Truly - normally representing (I think) the 9th Louisiana of the Red River Campaign who for some reason had decided to put together a Louisiana Tiger Rifles impression! They didn't bear close inspection, but I definitely gave them credit for the effort; note they even had a bagpiper and a Chatham Roberdeau Wheat-sized commander!

I knew you'd have some of Zouave photos! Those "Wheats Tigers" guys actually wouldn't look that bad if they had blue jackets instead of the "butternut" ones so many in that area like to wear. Between making uniforms at cost for SCV brothers so they'll look proper during school days at events, this thread has me halfway wondering if I ought to try building Zouave uniform for such occasions.

Since our unit never fought at Manassas (54th PVI Co A) our guys portrayed the 11th New York Fire Zouaves. Uniform being a red shirt, dark blue pants, havelock or fez, black neckerchief and black arm band. We didn't have a lot men so not all in our unit had the correct gear. They had a great time. This was the 160th Anniversary of the Battle of Manasses at the Daniel Lady Farm, April 24-25, 2021 in Gettysburg, PA. They were called the Fire Zouaves because the men were actual New York Fire Fighters, thus the red shirts.

The picture above shows two gentleman that were also at the Daniel Lady Farm, April 24-25. I believe they were representing a unit from Louisiana. The hats they are wearing were part of their uniform. They wrote nasty things on the hats, I was told. The hat on the man on the left said: "Mr. Lincoln wears a dress". I found that very interesting. Though I think uniforms like these make them sitting ducks. Just my opinion. They are certainly colorful and interesting.
