Happy New Year! I'll be back at the National Archives once they finally reopen. They've been closed since March due to the pandemic, so I can't wait to get started again.

The beginning of the year means that it’s time for our annual Civil War pension giveaway! Visit www.RhinehartRoots.com/pages/drawing by Saturday, January 9th, 2021, to be entered in a drawing for a free Civil War pension file from the National Archives.

We're drawing two winners this year. First prize is a complete Union Army pension file, scanned in full color and delivered to you in high resolution images. Second prize is half off our retrieval and scanning rates for the complete pension file. Good luck!

Here's to a new year with new discoveries!

They're getting closer to reopening. I got an email about a month ago, saying that they were restarting some limited order fulfillment, and did I still want the records I had been waiting for just about a year for? I'm taking that as a good sign, even if I no longer quite remember what I sent for (It was related to the Andersonville trial, but I can't remember if it was jurors or witnesses). I figure the place will be mobbed once they finally DO get back to a full open.

Yeah, they were operating on a very limited staff basis, but without the public allowed in the building yet. They've reversed some of that recently though, with the second wave of the virus that was going around. Many of the regional branches that were allowing some of their staff back in had to send them back home. I suspect it will be at least until the spring before the main branch in DC will be open to the public again. They get visitors from around the country and around the world, so they have to be especially careful there.
