Recent Find OK Christmas Is Over Time To See the Goodies

A metal detector was on my Christmas list but apparently I was too close to the bottom of the Nice list for Santa to consider it. Anyway, I'm looking for a new or gently used hobbyist level metal detector and not a "toy" or a kid-level unit. But I don't have much more than $250 to spend. Am I being realistic in my expectations? Any suggestions for a brand and model? Thanks!

Hey those percussion caps are a wonderful gift and hard to get now!
Yes. I had not noticed until somebody mentioned it. I hoped fo 3 tins but 1 will do. I wanted RWS brand: I’ve never used Remington. The info on the back says it provides a hotter flame than their previous design.

Well I will let @Western Reserve Volunteer tell you all the fun things he got for Christmas himself.
I got the traditional ornament from Hixons..its a china cat with delft pattern, and a pair of victorians strolling under a bumbershoot for my January display;and believe it or not..an assortment of Pringles for work. (Short cans)..so that I can have my carbs and not need to share them!

I am giving myself a new corset, as mine isn’t really period, but just “good enough”...and, I looove jewelry..both the making and the wearing..I bought a mexican fire opal a few years ago, and I want to get it set. Our local jeweler does all his work in house, including repair. So I am taking my opal up there with some design ideas. I do have a budget. Also I got my dividend check, so that is going toward this project!

Here's a little chart of cap brands and how good they:
RWS-Good, solid, dependable caps
Remington- SUPER AWESOME good caps!
CCI- Don't touch them with a ten foot stick! If someone gives a tin chunk it into the nearest river or trash can! Utterly worthless, poor fit, no bang, and all around waste of money.

Kind of funny CCI caps are so worthless when their primers (modern) are pretty decent. Even funnier when one discovers CCI is owned by Remington and Remingtons are the best around.

Merry Christmas!

If you love banjo pickin like we do here in West Virginia you'll love it. 🛶
I had the original LP back in the day. Have it on CD now but to get an original made my day as it brought back the days of my BIG ole 4 speaker stereo system. Thanks Bob & Mary.

Reproduction Remington with .45 Long Colt conversion cylinder. Shots high but windage is dead on.

A quick web check shows CCI is owned by Vista who also owns Federal.

Yeah Federal is owned by Remington as well. All one big conglomerate. A video the CEO did recently in response to folks furious over not being able to get stuff explains it.
Not any more. Remington went kaput just a few months ago. There are 7 new owners of Remington's various businesses. Vista is the new owner of Remington's ammunition and accessories, Ruger now owns Remington's Marlin Firearms while Roundhill owns Remington Firearms.

I’ve owned a Garret metal detector and a Garret pro pointer for about a year now, they are both pretty good and relatively cheap to buy. To be honest $250 will get you a decent metal detector, don’t be fooled into thinking that the price reflects the quality. Also, you’re going to need all of the paraphernalia that detectorists use, something to dig with, water bottles for cleaning, a find bag and containers to keep your finds in. Gloves and a pin pointer. It’s a great hobby and quite addictive but it can get expensive if you allow it to.

Well, in terms of Civil War stuff, I received a new gum blanket, which should serve me well as a ground cloth, blanket roll, and a poncho. I look forward to having events to use it at... but in the meantime I’ll be reading the book on Civil War Rubber products I also got! In addition, I received a lovely book from the 1970s entitled “Chief Wawatam: The Story of A Hand Bomber”, about the titular Mackinaw City ice breaking train ferry, which is a great book containing interviews with many of the ships last crew (she was retired in the 1980s, later cut down to a barge, and finally scrapped a few years back). I also got a book covering WW2 and the Great Lakes.

I also did some Xmas shopping for myself and got a used copy of Eric Foners book on the Reconstruction and a book covering Antietam in Period Photos.
