I was just on the phone with a genealogist friend in Skowhegan (Maine) who conducts cemetery tours there. She told me that there is buried in the Southside Cemetery a Confederate soldier and that when the other ACW veterans receive a flag, his grave has a Confederate flag. He was William Rice McQuown of Bardstown, KY who had served in the 2nd and 4th Kentucky Infantries. A musician, it was he who put to music "Oh, Lay me away with the boys in gray". He married a woman from Maine and is buried in her family's plot.
Just beyond the double grave of the McQuowns is a small stone. My friend tells me that the name on the stone has no cemetery card and, judging both by the name and the date, it may have been his dog. The grave, along with his photograph, are on Find a Grave: https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/140959594/william-r.-mcquown.
