I was just on the phone with a genealogist friend in Skowhegan (Maine) who conducts cemetery tours there. She told me that there is buried in the Southside Cemetery a Confederate soldier and that when the other ACW veterans receive a flag, his grave has a Confederate flag. He was William Rice McQuown of Bardstown, KY who had served in the 2nd and 4th Kentucky Infantries. A musician, it was he who put to music "Oh, Lay me away with the boys in gray". He married a woman from Maine and is buried in her family's plot.

Just beyond the double grave of the McQuowns is a small stone. My friend tells me that the name on the stone has no cemetery card and, judging both by the name and the date, it may have been his dog. The grave, along with his photograph, are on Find a Grave: https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/140959594/william-r.-mcquown.

That's pretty cool he has a photo for him. I wondered if he served time at Point Look Out in Maryland being buried that far up north? Very interesting.

He was a musician all his life and traveled around. When he died, he was living in Boston. His being buried in Maine was probably because his wife's family had a burial plot there.

Was his wife from Maine?
Yes. Find a Grave says that her maiden name was "Gray" but this may have been the name of a 2nd husband. She was a "Savage" (butt of many jokes) from central Maine. I live only a few blocks from Savage Street in our town.

The Savage family was quite active in ACW and the plot must be resplendent with flags on Memorial Day--all Federal and one Confederate!

Any link to Savage Arms?
