I found this film/documentary while researching another topic on the Civil War.

In researching for a project about demographics, I came upon a statement by a Boston demographer who stated that the ardent desire of the Boston Irish to fight against the Confederacy was largely based on their dislike of the British (Britain was perceived as backing CSA).

@Fairfield It is my impression that some members of the Brigade felt that their Civil War service would prepare them for later military endeavours against Britain. It would seem that the Finian invasion of Canada confirmed that.

Yes, that is probably true--at least, it surely became true. However, I suspect that the ordinary Irishman on the streets of Boston wasn't thinking that far ahead.

@Sgt. Tyree I could be wrong, and frequently am, but I don't believe there was a specifically Irish Brigade in the Army of Northern Virginia. However it is my impression that there were a few regiments scattered throughout that Army with a large portion of Irish soldiers in them.

Yes there was the Irish 24th Georgia who fought directly with the Union Irish 69th New York at Fredericksburg.
Then there was 33rd Virginia, Co E, Stonewall Brigade + 6th Louisiana + 8th Alabama, Co I “Emerald Guards”
I think they were all in the AONV.

I just ordered the book Chicago's Irish Legion : The 90th Illinois Volunteers in the Civil War by Swan. Have any of you read this? I'm curious to read about their performance in the war.
