Hello everyone,

With the permission of the late Ed Bearss and his daughter Mary (Ginny), a few months ago we arranged to reprint Ed's long out-of-print and exceedingly expensive 3-volume The Campaign for Vicksburg set!

We are also reprinting (in a lovely red cloth with silver stamping) the 3-volumeThe Bachelder Papers: Gettysburg in Their Own Words (the single most important source on Gettysburg after the Official Records volume), the very rare 1-vol. John Bachelder's History of Gettysburg, and the oversize seven black and white Bachelder Maps keyed to the footnotes in the Papers and single-volume history. See the links below for more information!

I own Bearss' Vicksburg trilogy (Morningside) and I can vouch for its value. While Bearss was not omniscient nor infallible, he came mighty close to both. I had been reading about Vicksburg most of my life, but I don't think I fully understood it until I read the trilogy (and Bearss friend Warren Grabau's Ninety-Eight Days).

Fundamental Civil War scholarship and writing, and you owe it to yourself to save your milk money and invest in the trilogy while it's obtainable!

The only problem I have with this is that it devalues my originals.

I’d like to think the first round of printing will still hold the value assigned to it - and, these later editions won’t dilute the value of the originals.
Only time will tell, but I know first printings still hold value over the latter ones in many cases. If this publishing company is doing a pre-order on demand style printing almost, it doesn’t sound as though they will be creating too terribly many to flood the market.

While they’ll read like the originals, let’s think positively that it’d be like an original Confederate naval two part buckle vs. a repro. They both hold up your trousers but the original is where the value is.

Trust me it will bring the value of the originals down, I have seen it many times in the past.

Heh... this reminds me of a conversation I had with a friend of mine a few years back. He was into antiques (the deal he had with his wife is that he could do anything he wanted so long as his hobby was self-funding... he was pretty good at spotting things he didn't necessarily want but knew he could sell, and next thing you know his den was sporting an old-fashioned 'Coke' machine)... anyway, I was showing him my Civil War book collection including my ORNs, and I noticed a weird reaction when I mentioned they were reprints, which just got weirder when I mentioned I had had an incomplete set of originals but sold them off when I got the reprint set. It suddenly came to me that he was thinking of the books' inherent value as antiques, whereas I was reading them for content. Different approaches...

I understand you thoughts, as when I was in my teens I would go to the Bham library to search the OR for places to dig, after 3 years my Mom gave me the complete set for Christmas and I was blown away. I Thanked her over and over but at the end of the day I didn't really need the whole set. Now you can get them on line or in a CD.
