Today I had a doctors appointment for my yearly physical. I arrived early and decided to see if there might be something nearby of interest. I discovered Herndon Baptist Church about 1/4 mile away. I had about 20 minutes so I drove by and took a quick walk through. Look what I found.

Pvt Bartholomew Kidd “B. K.” Bragg

Pvt., Co. H, 52nd Va. Infantry, CSA

I am just starting my research on him, but this is all I have so far found on Find a Grave.

Bartholomew's first wife, Martha Ann Tyler, died sometime after Sept. 24, 1860 (she was enumerated on that date on the 1860 U.S. Census for Augusta Co., VA with Bartholomew and seven of their children) and before Dec. 14, 1865 (the date Bartholomew married Annie Virginia Hughes). Bartholomew and Martha Ann Tyler were the parents of nine children: Nancy Bragg (born about 1841), Mary Bragg (born about 1843), John Kidd Bragg, James Henry Bragg, Zachariah T. Bragg (born about 1859), Richard Bragg (born about 1852), Alexander H. Bragg (born about 1855), and (?)twins, Mary A. & John L. Bragg (born about 1869).

7 pages of fold3 records. He enlisted at the age of 47 in Staunton on July 23,1861 for 1 year and mustered-in on July 30, 1861. Listed as "Present" on all Company Muster Rolls although one says he was "Absent without leave from 1st March to 16th March 1862". Discharged in October 1862.

Thanks for the information. I appreciate your helping bring life to his story.

I wonder what if any action he saw.

Doesn't say in the fold3 records. Probably have to look at the regimental history to get any sense of that.

Note his age of 47.
He is listed as a farmer.
He was discharged because he was over the Conscription age.
Died in Nelson Co. Virginia 11-13-1865 of the dropsy.

That is, indeed, quite a marker. That'd take a quart of D2, a ladder, and all afternoon to clean. It's nice that the finial is still intact; those somehow seem to frequently have got broken off very early on (can only think it was vandalism as they aren't typically easy to get at). Very good photo, too.
