His regiment served under Col. Statham in Breckinridge's Division at Shiloh, before being transferred to Stewart's/Strahl's brigade. When Brigadier George Maney was elevated to division command around Atlanta, his regiment was transferred to Maney's brigade, as it needed a proper Colonel to lead it. He commanded the brigade at Peachtree Creek and at Bald Hill (aka Battle of Atlanta), where he was cut down.

He must have been really loyal to the 19th Tennessee, he had them transferred to his new brigade when he was in the Atlanta Campaign. He earlier had led the19th at Chickamauga and Chattanooga as well.

Certainly you do see that a lot throughout the war, where a regiment will be transferred to a different brigade so its colonel could take command.
However, there are several instances where only the Colonel is transferred. For example, Colonel Thomas A. Smythe, of the 1st Deleware, was transferred to command the Irish Brigade, whilst his regiment stayed in Sam Carroll's Brigade. At Chickamauga, Colonel John H. Kelly of the 8th Arkansas was transferred to command a provisional brigade in Preston's division, while his regiment stayed in Govan's brigade.
