Despite earlier plans to hold the Remembrance Day parade and Civil War Ball in Gettysburg this Nov. 21, the sponsoring organization, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, announced yesterday that the parade and ball are now cancelled (see below). Please disregard the earlier post stating that the parade would take place as usual.

That is sad news..... Bill

More about the cancellation from the SUV:

Dear Ladies and Gentleman,

By now you have seen General Order #38 canceling the Remembrance Day events scheduled for November 21. While we are all disappointed we must remember that during this Covid-19 pandemic health and safety of not only the thousands of re-enactors, and spectators but also the residents of the Town of Gettysburg must come first.

In the past few years we've overcome many obstacles, torrential rain, an early November blizzard, heat, cold, change in parade route and yes terrorist threats, and have overcome them all, but this obstacle we can't. We would like to thank you for your support of the Annual Remembrance Day parade and hope to see you on November 20, 2021.

We know that there may be other groups holding ceremonies that weekend and we would be more than happy post them on this page. For those that bought tickets for the Original Civil War Ball your money will be refunded or if you wish your tickets will be honored for next year’s Ball.

Thank you again for your support and we will see you November 20, 2021

im still going to go there and visit all of the shops that i go into when im there

I think a lot of people are going to be doing things with their reenacting units in the cemetery and on the battlefield that day on their own even if there's no parade--the parade may be canceled, but it's still Remembrance Day--they didn't close the whole town or the battlefield or the National Cemetery.

That's right. The parade would have been nice but my whole unit will be there regardless.

Huzzah! That's the style! The purpose of the day is to honor the service and sacrifice of those who came before, not just have a big parade. I'll be there laying a wreath at the Field Musician's monument in Unity Park and will also probably visit the Soldier's National Cemetery and the Regulars monument on the battlefield.

I am not real surprised at this one. They are cancelling everything.
This comes as no surprise. :frown:

On the other hand, in my totally different part of the country here in East Texas this weekend is the usual huge indoor/outdoor Canton Flea Market known as First Monday (because it's held every weekend prior to the first Monday of every month) and despite a little AM rain and a decline in attendees it was about as usual. Although supposedly mandatory according to our Governor, the annoying MASKS were only about 10-20% in evidence. I found a 1961 copy of The Wartime Papers Of R. E. Lee for $8 and a grapeshot dug at Haines' Bluff north of Vicksburg for $15.

That's too bad. I was not planning on going but I still feel bad when regular annual events get cancelled. Ever notice that certain numbers just strike fear in your heart? 13? 666? 2020? 😊

The SVR pretty much had to stay within the PA State's guidelines of no more than 250 people are allowed to gather outside due to the "Rona." The parade would gather a few more than that.
Our SVR unit, Co. A, 7th New Jersey, is still going and will hold a memorial service to the 7th NJ at the "Bullet Monument" out at the Peach Orchard AND still stand Honor Guard at the National Cemetery at 5:30 pm at the Luminaries.

The 12th NJVI Co. K will also be there about 20 of us. On Sat. morning we are having a ceremony at the Jersey section of the cemetery followed by one at the 12th's monument. In the afternoon we will take a walk out to the Bliss barn site to visit the 12th's marker there for a ceremony. After that we will be tipping a few at one of a couple of houses we rented for the weekend on Baltimore St.
