One of the perks I have is living very close to Fort Donelson Battlefield. So I get to visit often. I go early in the morning. My great-great Grandfather was in the 49th Tenn infantry Regiment assigned garrison duty. They did best they could cleaning up the vandalism to the monument. When I walked up the hill where Buckner stood his ground, the morning wildlife was there watching me.

Great photos. Here’s a few from my visit including the Dover Hotel where the surrender took place.

One of the biggest losses for the Confederate Army was at Fort Donelson. They lost all those men and lossing all those battles while in the eastern theater they where winning all the battles. I have yet to been there but would like to. I haven't been out west yet for civil war sites.

They were indeed left hanging so to speak. Columbus, Bowling Green are where they focused. The battle was pivotal and is often left in the shadows of Shiloh. Grant outflanked the Confederates killing the railroad. I digress.

Couple more from yesterday's visit. The Dover House where Buchner surrendered to Grant. And marker where the Crisp house stood that Grant used as his command post.

Great pictures and thanks for giving us an update on the cleaning up of the monument. I visited Ft. Donelson in the summer of 2012 and it is a beautiful, pastoral place in my opinion, and should be seen if possible. I will remember it also because it was the tail end of a Vicksburg trip and was during a massive drought/heat wave and the temp was 106 no kidding! You could only stay outside your vehicle for awhile and walking/climbing was impossible.

Beautiful place .I thought at first that that was a Bob cat on the first picture til I saw the other picture with the two dogs. What is on the plague to the statue .This must be a recent statue for most are full of algae or nor as powerful stance or appearance Did Forrest leave on his own or was he ordered to..?Did Grant order UCS from the commander when he had not requested this before because Pillow deserted the Union even when Grant did and wanted Pillow to go with him.\? From here out Grant would make the same order from all defeated generals along with Lee.Why was Pillow either not reinforced or ordered to retreat to Vicksburg? Why was there no naval attempt against Foote? I have read where both this fort and Henry fell due to the ancient cannons that these forts had? Would you say that these battles were exercises or experiments for Grant leading to Vicksburg?
