Real or Faux? My father in law traded for this. Is it a reproduction?

Please help me identify this as real or fake and maybe a ballpark figure of it's worth. He traded for it. I was disappointed that the blade and scabbard have been cleaned.

I'm confused. I saw ADK on the list for 1862-1865. Thanks for the great link. Prior to this, my only interest has been civil war books.

I do now. Thank you. I was also thinking the Ames stamp on the other side wasn't what I have seen on other examples. Thanks again.

It is indeed a repop. Ames had several different stampings over the years but this ain't one of them way to sloppy. Most 1860's will have the arch and from 1840 to 1860 will have the scroll.

So it was made to deceive. i hope he didn't trade away something very good.
Not neccesarily. Some of the vendors that cater to reenactors sell swords with such markings so the user has one marked similar to the originals. Fall Creek Suttlers and C&S Sutlery sell such sabers. Unfortunately, if you are going to get into collecting original swords, you need to do some homework to learn about original markings, or seek advice from someone who has already obtained such knowledge.

Reputable dealers will have a buy back policy if the object proves to be problematic. Without that, in writing, no deal of any kind should ever be made. For what it is worth, there are thousands of period sabers & unless they have a very special provenance, they have little value apart from family or personal nostalgic value.

Eh, no skin off my back. I presented him with what I had learned, complete with comparison photos, and he told me he wants an expert to look at it. That ****** me off until he said that even if it's a repo that it's worth $600 because that's what his friend (the seller) told him. I could only laugh because he went from ignorant to stupid in two sentences.

kevin you and your father in law have nothing to be ashamed of (mad - yes. Cheated - yes) but not ashamed. Some republicans are so good they get the pro’s guessing. Sorry this turned out on the bad end for your family.
Some democrats are ok too.....LOL :nerd:
