One of the many heroes of the 2nd day of combat. Threw his regiment into the thick of the Confederate tide.

He was asked by congressman Charles Van Wyck to help train the raw recruits. Thats how he became drillmaster and captain in the 56th New York. This congressman later became a brigadier general in the Civil War.

His 124th New York were given the nickname the "Orange Blossoms" by Ellis at Chancellorsville. I assume because the regiment was raised in Orange County New York? By the way this regiment lost 40% of its strength at Chancellorsville.

When he was shot in the head at Gettysburg he, along with the other field officers, were mounted on horses. His major , James Cromwell, said these words "The men must see us today". There is a painting by Don Troiani by that has that as a title and it dipicts Ellis and his regiment at Gettysburg.
