Its kind of sad that Burnside spent his career just one step away from success.
No pontoons ag Fburg...no gakers on the carbine that bares his name until he had to step away from it. No great field success except maybe minor success in NC early in the war.
Nice gun though. 5th Model I think with a number 17739. Still has the saddle ring and the action works quite well.

It says Burnside patent then it says model of 186?
Its a model 1864 and should have Cast Steel 1864 on the barrel. Below are the SRS range.

Burnside borrowed money from friends to establish the Bristol Rifle Works. He expected an order for $90,000 worth of firearms. Burnside was offered the chance to win the full contract for his carbine if he paid a five thousand bribe to an unnamed War Dept. official. Burnside told a West Point classmate that he indignantly refused, and that his only regret was that he did not fell him on the ground. He was ruined financially after that.

Yep cast steel in small stamp in front of rear sight. Just a couple away from Co k.
