Was unaware Meredith was born in North Carolina. Then again, John Gibbon I believe was born in Kentucky yet grew up in North Carolina.
Odd how 2 Tarheels led the most legendary brigade in the Union army.

A fighting Quaker! Even today it would be intimidating to show up to a regiment and your colonel is 6'7", especially in 1861 lol. He was a sheriff, US marshal, railroad president and member of the Indiana House of Representatives before the war and just a farmer and tax assessor after the war. I can only imagine the impact the war and his wounds had on him. Sadly he never fully recovered from being wounded in the skull by a shell fragment and his horse falling on top of him while leading the Iron Brigade on July 1st at Gettysburg.

A forgotten Indiana legend for sure. HBD Long Sol

He actually commanded not only the Iron Brigade but briefly commanded the Division that the Iron Brigade belonged to.He relinquished command of the 1st Division, 1st Corps on July 2, 1863 when he was wounded.

He did get to command that Division again for one day (Nov. 13, 1863). From there he went on to command a post in Cairo,Illinois. Then to command the District of Western Kentucky.
