It appears that some more pieces of Civil War ground will be acquired for preservation.

A brief article in today's Harrisburg Patriot-News reports that the American Battlefield Trust will be acquiring two tracts adjacent to Gettysburg National Military Park.

Cynthia Hernandez, a spokesman for the National Park Service, said that the tracts in question are the East Cemetery Hill tract and the Vermont tract portions of the Gettysburg battlefield, which were previously held by a private property owner. She went on to say that the Trust plans to restore the East Cemetery Hill tract to its 1863 appearance and that the land will be protected with a conservation easement.

I can take an educated guess and say that the East Cemetery Hill tract is probably located on the east side of Cemetery Hill.

Anyone know where the Vermont tract is or how it came to be known by that name?

The Cemetery Hill tract is along the Baltimore Pike, south of Stevens' Knoll. The Vermont tract is south of Big Round Top, presumably where the 1st Vermont Cavalry were.
