I have a dagguerotype of two girls wearing what appear to be Civil War military belts. Are they? and if they are, can anyone identify them? Best. dj

Welcome From THE Heart Of Dixie. IMHO, they are not wearing any CW belt plate I have ever seen.

It's a very nice picture! However, I think that it may be a mother and son. The dress on the figure on the right is off-shoulder (so she's not in mourning) and it seems to be black. Black was for married women. Looking at the short hair and the blunt hand of the smaller figure on the left, it may be a little boy. The figure on the right looks to be seated--so she may be considerable taller than the figure on the right who seems to be standing.

Hi and you've already heard enough ' no's ' to convince you. It's an awesome image even without a military touch! They're pre-war, if you're having a shot at tracking them down.

Those buckles, I mean the type of closure seem to have been common? Not an expert at all, family just for some reason has a ton of odds and ends passed down and passed down and passed down- few of these. It's unclear why we keep doing that since they get uncovered, someone says " Look! Belt buckles, cool! " then packed away for the next generation to do the same thing.

Welcome to the forum, feel free to share any more images. Thanks for bringing this one here!

The girl on the right appears to be wearing a 2 piece tongue and wreath sash buckle. These were thin brass buckles worn by ladies. Not military though.

Hello All from Texas. I chase a lot of old people. I purchased this photo early last week and the seller postulated that they girls may be wearing military belts. It was interesting and reasonably priced. There was an inscription on the back of the glass and one written inside on the cardboard underneath the frame. The information you provided is quite useful! I am fairly certain I have identified the persons in the photograph and am awaiting confirmation from a relative. I have a photo of the girl/lady in later life and I believe they are the same person. Interesting comment about the smaller one being a boy. I believe it is her son. Great fun tracking down this kind of thing. Photo was taken in 1863 most likely in Illinois. My great great grandfather was in the 3rd Arkansas Cavalry and died during the Civil War (presumably after being captured) in 1863. Buried in the military graveyard in Arkansas. Don't know a lot about him, but am still researching. Thanks for the kind welcome! Best. Dana
