Luke,
I have some more material that I hope you can use. Much of our stuff is in storage right now, and I'm struggling to access all those years of persona notes. Never thought they would be of any interest to anyone else. I'm going to make 3 separate posts for this stuff because it is a lot of material and I don't want to hog the forum space. One will be for Vicksburg troops; another for Port Hudson troops and a third for Johnston's relief force.
And I will start from the last up.

...On May 20-21, I[Johnston] was joined [at Jackson] by the brigades of Generals Gist, Ector, McNair.
The DIVISION of General Loring, cut off from General Pemberton in the battle of Baker's Creek, reached Jackson on the 20th,
General Maxey, with his brigade, on the 23rd.
By June 4, the army had, in addition to these, been re-enforced by the brigade of General [N. G.] Evans, the DIVISION of General Breckinridge, the DIVISION of cavalry, numbering 2,800, commanded by Brigadier General W. H. Jackson.
Small as was this force (about 24,000 infantry & artillery,* not one THIRD of that of the enemy), it was deficient in artillery, in ammunition for all arms, field transportation, could not be moved upon that enemy (already entrenching his large force) with any hope of success.
6/1/63 Jackson, Johnston’s AG to Johnston-Breckenridge's Div, but 2 Btrys due tonight, has arrived numbers 5200 eff/5600 Agg.
Almost as soon as Grant left Jackson, Johnston reentered & began to assemble an army to go to Pemberton's relief. By 3 June 1863 Johnston has amassed some 31,000 men & 72 cannon for his Army of Relief. Ector’s & McNair’s veteran troops (about 3,000) would be expected to arrive by dusk on the 16th.
Johnston, who had wanted to abandon the city before the siege rather than risk losing Pemberton’s army, assembled a relief force at Jackson Canton. In mid-June, he had 28,000 men
