Confederate Unit Strengths in the Vicksburg Campaign

Working on war gaming scenario. I have found quite limited amount of information regarding the strength of certain Confederate units in these campaigns. I guess that can be chocked up to the fact that Confederate record keeping was poor throughout the war, and this campaign takes place over a series of months with many minor battles.
The only bit of detail I've gotten was that Bowen's 2 brigade division numbered 5,000 men at Champion Hill. That and Gregg's Brigade numbered an absurd 3,200 men at Raymond.
Does anyone else have any more details on this campaign in this regard? I doubt I will get regimental or even brigade strengths on this. Divisional strengths would be quite helpful.

This may not be exactly what you want. It is taken from my notes from several volumes/chapters of RG #109 in the National Archives. I have extracted this material from my personal notes. The table did not reproduce the spacing very well [operator incompetence]

1/19 Grenada, Price to Loring cdg Army of Ms-I have, in compliance with your orders, directed the 2nd Bgde of Bowen's Div to hold themselves readiness to move to Panola.
The effective total of this Bgde is 1,309.
The effective total of Green's Bgde (the only other troops of my corps now here) is 2,891.

I communicate these facts so that a different disposition may be made if the Bgde ordered to Panola is too weak for these duties of that position.

[1/21] 1/2 Dept of Ms & E La, #s 5-Grenada, note-apparently corrected to 1/21
Hereafter the organization of the army, Dept of Ms & East La, will be as follows, viz:

The Army will consist of two Div’s to be known as 1st & 2nd Div, & commanded, respectively, by Maj Gen W. W. Loring & Maj Gen Sterling Price.
Each Div will consist of two Bgdes.
1st Div comprises Tilghman's Bgde, Rust's Bgde, & Waul's Tex Legion, Col Waul cdg.
Gen Tilghman will take command of the Bgde hitherto under command of Gen Baldwin.
The command hitherto known as Rust's Div is merged into one Bgde, to be known as Rust's Bgde.

2nd Div comprises Bowen's Bgde & Green's Bgde.
The command hitherto known as Bowen's Div is resolved into two Bgdes, Gen Bowen taking command of one, Gen Green having command of the other.
The light Btrys will remain as at present organized, with the exception of being attached to Div in place of Corps.

I wrote in post #2 above: "It is taken from my notes from several volumes/chapters of RG #109 in the National Archives."

I should have been more precise and written-My personal notes on such topics rely heavily on the National Archives materials, but are also augmented by other sources, including, of course, the Official Records.

There are references in these multiple sources to the innumerable changes in organization as well as strength reports and strength estimates. As you know, they just have to be found, extracted and compiled for your specific needs. Meticulous work.

Here is an example from Official Records, Vol 24/part 3:

Bovina, May 14, 1863.
General Joseph E. Johnston, Jackson:
I have the honor to acknowledge receipt of your communication. I move at once with whole available force, about 16,000, from Edwards Depot, leaving Vaughn’s brigade, about 1,500, at Big Black Bridge. Tilghman’s brigade, 1,500, now at Baldwin’s Ferry, I have ordered to bring up the rear of my column. He will be, however, from 15 to 20 miles behind it. Baldwin’s Ferry will be left necessarily unprotected. To hold Vicksburg are Smith’s and Forney’s divisions, extending from Snyder’s Mill to Warren ton, numbering, effective, 7,500 men. To this should have been added Waul’s Legion, the Mississippi State troops, and Higgins’. The men have been marching several days, are much fatigued, and, I fear, will straggle very much. In directing this move, I do not think you fully comprehend the position that Vicksburg will be left in, but I comply at once with your order.
J. C. PEMBERTON.

Let me know if I can be of any help.

1st Div comprises Tilghman's Bgde, Rust's Bgde, & Waul's Tex Legion, Col Waul cdg.
Gen Tilghman will take command of the Bgde hitherto under command of Gen Baldwin.
The command hitherto known as Rust's Div is merged into one Bgde, to be known as Rust's Bgde.

The command hitherto known as Bowen's Div is resolved into two Bgdes, Gen Bowen taking command of one, Gen Green having command of the other.
The light Btrys will remain as at present organized, with the exception of being attached to Div in place of Corps.

Thank you immensly. This is some helpful information, if a bit dense.

Luke,
I have some more material that I hope you can use. Much of our stuff is in storage right now, and I'm struggling to access all those years of persona notes. Never thought they would be of any interest to anyone else. I'm going to make 3 separate posts for this stuff because it is a lot of material and I don't want to hog the forum space. One will be for Vicksburg troops; another for Port Hudson troops and a third for Johnston's relief force.
And I will start from the last up.

...On May 20-21, I[Johnston] was joined [at Jackson] by the brigades of Generals Gist, Ector, McNair.
The DIVISION of General Loring, cut off from General Pemberton in the battle of Baker's Creek, reached Jackson on the 20th,
General Maxey, with his brigade, on the 23rd.

By June 4, the army had, in addition to these, been re-enforced by the brigade of General [N. G.] Evans, the DIVISION of General Breckinridge, the DIVISION of cavalry, numbering 2,800, commanded by Brigadier General W. H. Jackson.
Small as was this force (about 24,000 infantry & artillery,* not one THIRD of that of the enemy), it was deficient in artillery, in ammunition for all arms, field transportation, could not be moved upon that enemy (already entrenching his large force) with any hope of success.

6/1/63 Jackson, Johnston’s AG to Johnston-Breckenridge's Div, but 2 Btrys due tonight, has arrived numbers 5200 eff/5600 Agg.

Almost as soon as Grant left Jackson, Johnston reentered & began to assemble an army to go to Pemberton's relief. By 3 June 1863 Johnston has amassed some 31,000 men & 72 cannon for his Army of Relief. Ector’s & McNair’s veteran troops (about 3,000) would be expected to arrive by dusk on the 16th.

Johnston, who had wanted to abandon the city before the siege rather than risk losing Pemberton’s army, assembled a relief force at Jackson Canton. In mid-June, he had 28,000 men

4/24 Report of AAG Portis, HQS 4TH MIL. DIST., DEPT. OF MISS. & La
I have the honor to report that Brig-Gen Adams left the depot at this place this evening, a few minutes before 4 o'clock, with the 26th Ms Regt, numbering: Total, 420; Agg, 456. Seven Co’s of the 15th Ms Regt; Total, 373; Agg, 394.
The general was delayed on account of the troops not being supplied with rations, & because of the delay on the part of the artillery company & the want of transportation. The Btry arrived at the depot, however, before the general left, but could not go for want of transportation.
Three Co's of the 15th Ms Regt were left to go with the Btry. Total, 111; Agg, 123. They are now at the depot, awaiting the arrival of a locomotive to take them on.

The BGen directed me to state that he would proceed to Morton Station; there await the arrival of the Btry & the three Co's left to go with it. He also directed me to inform you that communicate to you the condition of things, & also inform you as to what his movements will be from that point.

RECAPITULATION.

[Post Surrender References]
Gainesville, Ala., Aug 2, 1863.-At the earliest moment compatible with the performance of other & very pressing duties, I [Pemberton] have the honor to present the following report of the operations of the troops in the Department of Ms & Eastern La preceding & during the siege resulting in the capitulation of Vicksburg:

...Acting on these & other corroborating reports, I said to Gen Johnston, in closing my dispatch, "I am collecting troops here, & can send you 4,000 at once, if absolutely necessary; " & accordingly the Bgdes of Gen’ls Tilghman, Rust, & Buford were, on April 13, placed under orders to move with dispatch to Tullahoma, while Gen Vaughn's Bgde of East Tennesseans was ordered to be held in readiness to move at short notice. Major L. Mims, chief quartermaster, was instructed to furnish the necessary transportation as speedily as possible, & the following dispatch, dated April 12, was transmitted to Gen Johnston:

I will forward troops to you as fast as transportation can be furnished-about 8,000 men. Am satisfied Rosecrans will be reinforced from Grant's army. Shall I order troops to Tullahoma?

On April 15, statements made by persons just out of Memphis, of which I was notified by telegraph, indicated that the retrograde movement from Vicksburg was probably a ruse, & that an early attack might be expected on that place; & on the 16th I telegraphed Gen Johnston thus:

I can send you only two Bgdes. The latest information induces the belief that no large part of Grant's army will be removed.

...The troops sent you [Johnston] were taken from Port Hudson-
a Bgde, under Brig-Gen Buford, Agg present 4,065...
I ought to have back Buford's Bgde; certainly no more troops should leave this department.

...BOVINA, May 14, 1863.
I have the honor to acknowledge receipt of your communication. I move at once with whole available force (about 16,000) from Edwards Depot, leaving Vaughn's Bgde (about 1,500) at Big Black Bridge. Tilghman's Bgde (1,500), now at Baldwin's Ferry, I have ordered to bring up the rear of my column; he will be, however, from 15 to 20 miles behind it. Baldwin's Ferry will be left necessarily unprotected. To hold Vicksburg are Smith's & Forney's DIV’S, extending from Snyder's Mill to Warrenton, numbering 7,500 effective men.

...On the morning of the 18th...Waul's Texas Legion (about 500) was in reserve, especially to support the right of Moore's or the left of Lee's Bgdes.

Accordingly, Bowen's DIV (about 2,400) & Waul's Texas Legion (about 500) were designated for that purpose, thus reducing the force in the trenches to little over 15,500 men. The Legion was on the 18th assigned as a reserve to Forney's DIV, & was held in rear of Brig-Gen Moore's right, but on the evening of the 19th was transferred to Stevenson's DIV, & during the remainder of the siege was held in rear of Brig-Gen Lee's Bgde, occupying one of the most exposed & important positions on the whole line.

MERIDIAN, MISS., Nov 1, 1863 The following report of my [Johnston’s] operations in the Dept of Ms & Eastern La is respectfully offered
...On reaching Jackson, on the night of May 13, I found there the Bgdes of Gregg & Walker, reported at 6,000; learned from Gen Gregg that Maxey's Bgde was expected to arrive from Port Hudson the next day; that Gen Pemberton'’s forces, except the garrison of Port Hudson (5,000) & of Vicksburg, were at Edwards Depot, the Gen’ls Hqs at Bovina; that four DIV’S of the enemy, under Sherman, occupied Clinton, 10 miles WEST of Jackson, between Edwards Depot & ourselves. I was aware that reinforcements were on their way from the east, & that the advance of those under Gen Gist would probably arrive the next day, &, with Maxey's Bgde, swell my force to about 11,000.

6/21 Gen Johnston’s IG to Gen Joe Davis-In Vicksburg we have an effective garrison, variously computed at between 15,000 & 118,000 men, with probably equipment & arms inclusive for 22,000. At Port Hudson we have a force, say, of 5,000 or 6,000, with probably arms, etc for 8,000. I am particular in indicating the number of arms, as they are quite as important as the men, & are even more scarce. To save Vicksburg with the army which has been sent to Gen Johnston to achieve that object, is simply a physical impossibility. It cannot be done, & is not in the matter of hope or calculation. To relieve & extricate from the apparently doomed city its gallant garrison is frankly the only purpose for which operations are intended. True, we may have some miraculous interposition, but in the range of human accomplishment with his present force (barely 24,000), Gen Johnston does not expect rescue the gallant men within the walls of Vicksburg.

Some things I have to note:
Find it odd how the 10th is unconsolidated, and instead its the 3rd and 30th
Also, 51sst Tennessee? I presume this is either an error on the COnfederates' part or a unit which was later renumbered.

Captured at Fort Donelson, many of these Regiments were just being released in the fall of 62. Reorganization followed with several consolidations of the smaller Regiments.

30th Tenn
10/6/62 the 30th Tenn organized as a Battalion

10/6 [or 10/10] the 30th Tenn was temporarily consolidated with the 3rd Tenn

1/5/63 the 3rd & 30th Tenn Regts were separated today

1/6/63 the 10th Tenn & 30th Tenn were put together

10th Tenn

10/2/62 Reorganized with 10 small Companies [383 men]

10/18 Sat Holly Springs-41st & 10th Tenn were thrown together as one Regt under Col Farquharson with 5 Co’s for each Regt--several officers & NCO’s then detached for recruiting

1/6/63 the 10th Tenn & 30th Tenn were put together

51st Tenn
Only a very small portion at Fort Donelson-May have only had about 80 men at Donelson

10/11 S Jones to Tilghman, Jackson, Ms-The Sec of War has ordered Col Browder to reorganize the 51st Tenn. I understand part is in Ky with Bragg & part at Jackson. I ask that Col Browder bring that portion at Jackson to Knoxville en route to Ky. The Col is ordered to report to you & me.

The portion of the 51st which had been captured at Fort Donelson was released on parole at Vicksburg, 9/16. A report from Co "H" for July-Aug 1863, dated at Chattanooga, tells the story: "A part of the Co was at Fort Henry; retreated to Fort Donelson; captured Feb 16; prisoners of war till Sept 16, 1862, when exchanged at Vicksburg. Then went to Holly Springs & massed into the 50th Tenn under Col Sugg.

Hi, I research the Pointe Coupee Artillery Battalion. Co. A (second section) commanded by Sr. 1st Lt. John Yoist, Co. B (full battery) commanded by Capt. Wm. A. Davidson, Co. C (first section) commanded by Capt. Alex Chust all entered the Vicksburg garrison with 176 men. 168 were surrendered as Co. B lost 8 men killed during the battles and siege.
