Company I 67th Regiment New York

It seems like you're trying to confirm that he was the same man in the 67th, correct? Have you considered getting his information from the National Archives? The files there can provide some great information about the soldiers, their service, and some of their personal information. The pension file on him will likely tell you when and where he was born, where he lived, and when he died. His service records could also potentially tell you his age when he enlisted. All of this could help you determine if this was the right guy. His pension index card was posted on this thread earlier, so he does have files there that could be obtained.

It may sound like I'm only making a plug for my services here, but it seems to me that some of the questions that you're asking can be answered by getting his files from there. I'll be at the National Archives next week, so let me know if I can help.

Brian is correct. Good luck lassdm442

I requested a Compiled Military Service File from NARA and unfortunately received a reply that they could not locate his record. I had them look for him in Co I, 67th NY. INF. and added the additional info that I had from the post that he belonged to-
E, 1st L.I. Inf.
E, 2nd N.Y. Inf.

My great, great, great grandfather is listed in the 1890 Veterans Schedules in St. Louis, Mo as being in this regiment and company. I do not find his name on the roster.

John Ritter, Private, mustered in 1861 and mustered out in 1864. Company I 67th Regiment New York

If you have access to Ancestry.com you should be able to view the page.

BUT, He was also a member of Hassendeubel Post, No. 13, G.A.R., Department of Missouri and is listed as being in:
E, 1st L.I. Inf.
E, 2nd N.Y. Inf.

Source: Roster of the Department of Missouri, Grand Army of the Republic, and Its Auxiliaries, 1895 (Kansas City, Mo.: Western Veteran, 1895)

Any help appreciated to find him listed on an actual roster. Thanks!
Hello. I might be able to help you out, or at least point you in a direction. I recently published a book on the 67th NY. I Co. was recruited in Scio NY which is in Alleghany County in upstate NY. You were right that he is not listed on the roster. I have a copy of the adjutant general's report and there is no mention of a John Ritter. I'm sorry I couldn't give you more information. If you are interested in the unit, you can get my book on Amazon. Here is the link. https://www.amazon.com/dp/1687606080/?tag=civilwartalkc-20 Good luck!

As for NARA, there was a huge fire there in the 70's and many of the records were destroyed.

So ironic that you posted on this thread--
Per suggestion earlier in this thread, I asked my local library to purchase this book. I have yet to have a chance to read it, BUT I tried once again to get his file pulled from the NARA with some additional information and they found him!

He is listed as John REEDER and that name is on the roster. I received his pension file just a few days ago.
-Co. I, of the 1st regiment of the United States Volunteers, was enlisted by Capt. Brown, the 1st Regiment of Long Island, at Brooklyn, NY. Mustered in on May 1, 1861.

On the file it reads twice that it should be RITTER. Age, occupation and place of birth are the same as what I have in my records. He was actually discharged after one year by General Keyes in Harrisons Landing, VA. File reads that he was discharged due to chronic rheumatism and that he had been strong and hearty when enlisted and has done his duty faithfully.

If you have any other further information I would be very interested in learning more. Thanks!

This fire destroyed many of the more recent files. Thankfully none of the Civil War records were affected by that. Those are all kept in a different facility than the post 1917 records are.

Saw your post. I am looking at the roster and it says he enlisted at age 30. If I were to venture an educated guess, I would say he was most likely in the peninsula campaign, as the 67th saw most of their real heavy combat in that venture. In that campaign they fought at Yorktown, Williamsburg, White Oak Swamp, Fair Oaks, Malvern Hill. I don't know if this can help you out, but I do chronicle the role of the 67th in the book
