Ammo Collecting Civil War Bullets From $2 to $2000

Your 17 who are you calling grasshopper. I know your pretty smart as you got me to send you some of your bullets want list for free and then you buy $25 bullets. You are surly destined to be either a lawyer or politician. :cold:

Well no, not exactly. I never mean to take advantage, if that's what you're implying. I paid $25 for that bullet because it was one of those buy it, or the other guy will get it first situations. Plus, I recently got paid for manual lab- I mean working for a friend, so after brush hogging a gas pipeline with a Billy Goat (look it up) brush hog machine, with a tire falling off the wheel, I needed a reward.

Not sure it must be the amount of publicity each battle has received since they were fought and maybe because of so few being fought up this way in Pa. and Md.
Now that I think about it the south was overrun with soldiers most all the battles were from Va. south and the armies covered alot of ground and left a ton of relics behind them making them plentiful to find years later when metal detecting. The battles of gettysburg and antietam were concentrated in smaller areas and over the years it was harder to get permission to detect these smaller farms so relics from them are less available to purchase causing the higher price. Just my thoughts though.

Actually, the amount estimated is between 6 to 7 million. Those were the newest amounts I learned last year at Gettysburg from the NPS.

I learned THIS year from The Horse Soldier, a basic dropped bullet with true Gettysburg provenance is around $40.00 a bullet. This is a basic Minie ball from a known collection. The price goes up dramatically if the bullet starts getting rarer, etc and the provenance is with it. I wanted to bring one home with me in September and they were out of the $40.00 ones.
$40 for a Gettysburg bullet? Wow....I wonder how much a genuine Vicksburg minie ball would fetch.

Not $40, Bubba only gets $10 or maybe $15 at the CH museum.

Oh I can see that in the future far far away some young CW collector will say "Got this one from the infamous R McCardle collection, it was dug on one of his night raids at Shiloh NMP way back in the old days, I had to give 2000 bitcoins for it" :D

God forbid...

There has to be a sense of dignity when you're being honest. It's just not taught any more.

Richard I hope that your collection will be in your hands for many more years to come along with the knowledge you have about bullets, plates and anything and everything else! I know @redbob certainly enjoys learning from you as much as I do!

Hey, I'm just the comic relief and the one that Richard can roll his eyes at when I make a stupid statement like about vent holes. Also, I leave the "little " bullets to Richard and stick to the bigger ones because they are much harder to lose or damage, but much harder on the body to move.

I thought maybe I would post this if it is not allowed then could the hosts or moderators remove it. I know it is difficult to trust people nowadays as to the provenance of any thing civil war especially when it comes to something as common as bullets. If anyone is interested in a authentic dug Antietam minie ball I have several listed on e bay now all dug personally by me from what was private property at the time 1970's and 80's with permission. The price may be a little higher but they are genuine and from my collection.

It says this is a "Minie Ball Buckle?" No such thing exists. Run from this one.
This bullet may have been dug in Vicksburg (no way to verify) but it appears to have been carved on, melted in a fire, or having suffered some trauma to it. Certainly not worth $75. I'd give $1.00, maybe $2.00
Thanks for sharing this with me. It amazes me to see what people think they can get for a minie ball.

I thought you'd find that amusing! I never heard of it either and I just came across it.
