October Discussion: 30 Odd Minutes, Ghosts of Gettysburg with Mark Nesbitt

Good question about when ghost stories started. I tend to say that Gettysburg had no ghosts until the 1990s. But there are actually two "old" ghost stories associated with the battle. One involves Forney's fields, which include the area where Iverson's Pits is located. And the other involves Joshua Chamberlain,
I've heard that hauntings that are not related to ACW occur around Devil's Den going back to Native American culture. Perhaps not necessarily hauntings but spirituality.

Thanks, @risha. Your comment is another reference nudging me to read that Devil's Den book by Adelman and Smith. They'd likely have discovered historical information about the way Native Americans regarded the area. As I think of it, do you know about Devil's Den's significance to Native Americans, @diane?

It is an excellent book , but the part about Native Americans is based on old traditional stories passed down from the white settlers. There MAY have been a battle called "the battle of the crows" involving perhaps 100 warriors . Apparently lots of stone artefacts , arrowheads , etc were found in the general area .There was even speculation that the artefacts were from an advanced extinct civilization such as a "northern Aztec empire ." So any information covered in the book is based on suspect stories from the early white settlers .

What I've always heard, not being from the people who originally lived there, was that the whole area around was a continual battle grounds. Always somebody meeting up with somebody else to fight it out! Like in Lee's time, it was a sort of hub. Native people, speaking in a general way, usually stay out of places like that or bring an offering if they have to pass through. That way any unsettled spirits will be satisfied!

I don't it understand how I missed the chat date sorry folks I thought it was today but no the 21st …

Yes folks been fighting there - "Devils Den" long before the Civil war @diane

Correct I agree @JerseyBart

Feelings of being watched … Love old cemeteries, battlefields and old homes - if these walls could talk

Maybe mind games ? who knows

But some I know nothing about .... I find peace and sadness yet welcome … Old cemetery civil war earlier... I like back roads and off the beaten path roads like wise with food mom and pop joints dinners local favs Some are over rated as hidden spot gems. Getting off track sorry

But how you find the best places at times …
