Ammo Buck And Ball

Package4, if you have access to a copy of Moller's American Military Arms, Vol. 3, you will see that the old information that Norm Flayderman used has been greatly updated to state that the H&P alterations with the Model 1842 type bolster chambered breech bolster, and Model 1858 rear sight, were not rifled. My personal experience has verified Moller's statement that the H&P Model 1842 type breeches were not rifled.

W.B. Judkins in his memoir writes" As we were in the charge I had an old U.S. musket that would not shoot, but seeing a wild yankee lying in a ditch in the pike road with a fine rifle I asked him if it was any good, he said that it was, I told him to take off his belt and cartridge box and give it to me, which he did. I cut off my old belt, cartridge box and shoulder strap with my jack knife, put on the yankee accoutrements, took his rifle and went into the charge. Balls never flew thicker than they did there, and that is the only battle I was in where I know I shot a man." Page 60, Judkins Memoirs, he served in company G, 22nd Georgia Volunteer Infantry.

Thank you for the quote, my friend. I'm away from all of my research and couldn't dig it up.

IIRC, there was also a Massachusetts account that said something similar about a Confederate soldier picking up the accoutrements and rifle from a felled Yankee at the road.

I will have to look through my copy of "Isn't this Glorious?" and see if I can find the Massachusetts account. Thanks for mentioning that.
