Hi!
I came across these two fellows on the net, and I can't track down their units. Can anyone help?

The Carroll Guards who became Co. C of the 20th Mississippi and the Adams Rifles who became Co. E of the 20th wore tricorns early in the war . There may be many more .

I found an internet image of a Corp. Joseph Hargrave wearing his hat as a tricorn and carrying a carbine and 2 pistols . He is identified as belonging to the 23rd Mississippi infantry . Perhaps the image is misidentified or the soldiers were given whichever arms were available early in the war .

The first is a member of the 34th Ohio Infantry, "Piatt's Zouaves": http://civilwaref.blogspot.com/2013/05/abram-piatt-born-may-2-1821-abram.html

The second is an unidentified soldier: https://www.loc.gov/item/2010650238/

He is holding some type of repeating carbine so all I can say is I suspect he might be in the cavalry. I also googled other Civil War soldiers wearing tricorn hats and all the ones I found were from Mississippi, so if that was a trend there then maybe this one is too.

Those are great examples. I'll concentrate on the Mississippi units then. Thank you.

Piatt's Zoaves eh? Thank you for the links!

The second photo in the OP's post looks like a Maynard carbine without the tape primer door.
That was an interesting read. Until I saw that photo, I'd never heard of Maynards. But with only 21,000 or a little more made, I guess I see why. Well, with that stat & the other Mississippi tri-corns, it's probably safe to id him as a Mississippi volunteer. Interesting quote from the Pvt. Toby of the 1st Miss. Similar to the "load on Sunday and shoot all week" quote abt the Henry rifles.
Thanks!
