mmm... if Greenwood is going to be on Sunday, my flight time might conflict with it. Champion Hill is more practicable, though, since it's on the way to Jackson.

I do seem to recall that the Cairo's findspot is on private property-- leastwise, I don't think there's anything in particular to see there except a riverbank. One of the more-local folks might be able to confirm that.
Nothing definitive has been decided about Greenwood to my knowledge. It's just an idea that has been tossed around a bit.

Greenwood is because I begged shamelessly, and @DixieRifles is thinking about leaving me in the swamp so I won't bother him again. Neal may have paid him under the table. (Oh, the joys of being married to someone you've known most of your life, right?) Actually, I wanted to go because the Sanders boys blew themselves up there "a'tinckering with a mine"--if not for those guys (and the others I knew about) I might never have been obsessed with the war.

I was told the check is in the mail but I haven't seen it.

I was going to wait another 2 or 3 weeks until it was getting closer to the Tour before bringing up this side trip to Greenwood. I wasn't sure when things would wrap up at Vicksburg on Sunday. I was assuming Greenwood would be on a stop on the return trip.
Checking Google Maps, it shows it takes 1 Hour and 47 minutes to drive Hiways 3 & 49E. That might allow time to drive there and see some sights. Either you would return to Vicksburg late in the evening or spend the night at Greenwood and continue your travel on Monday.
I don't have any plans made but I was considering spending Monday night in or near Greenwood.

If I am able to make the trip up there it would have to be on Sunday and a return to the Houston area on Monday. Ima do my best to be able to make that happen.

One little piece of history about Fort Pemberton.
I don't have the date of this photo, but this is a Blakely cannon mounted on a steel carriage and steel wheels. It was put on a concrete pedestal and displayed so it pointed South across the 4-lane Hiway 82. It was named "Lady Polk" but I forget the history about this. I believe this exact cannon was used at the March 1863 Battle of Fort Pemberton but I have to confirm that story.
The cannon was restored about 10 - 15 years ago and placed on a replica carriage. When this was accomplished, they found out the cannon had been loaded all these years. These little ole ladies were quite lucky.
If you are able to make a trip or stop at Greenwood, this cannon is on display inside the Museum of the Mississippi Delta.

I found these photos. One dates back many years; surprised to see the cannon pointed North, towards the Tallahatchie River and not across Hiway 82. The other photo is the empty pedestal.

I will be headed to Vicksburg on Wed to finalise everything for our upcoming "Invasion" and meeting with the folks at the Courthouse museum, The VNP head ranger and USS Cairo folks. Meeting with the GM at the Hampton Inn and the GM at the Beechwood restaurant on Thursday. I'm also going to stop by McAllister Deli and pickup the menus for the box lunch on Sat at the picnic grounds at the Cairo. Planning on also stopping by to see 2 landowners (relic hunt) If I'm forgetting anything or you need something else let me know. If I can find the time in my busy schedule I might go take a look at the boats on the river :D Full Update when I return.

Just got back from Vicksburg and it was a very good trip. I was able to meet with almost all parties involved and reconfirmed everything and we are all set for a great weekend. I will also be posting an added presenter (local)at the Shirley house in the next few days.

George (Bubba) Bolm will be our guide at the Old Courthouse museum. Here we are in the my GGG Grandfathers library (McCardle room) I will be giving a short presentation on WH McCardle when we get to his library. I believe we will have Rock Star access.

Great work my friend. I had kids and grandkids all Labor Day weekend at an end-of-summer family vacation and hit the ground running at work when I got back. I have not checked in on this thread for about a week. I don't drink but I'm dang sure gonna buy you a beverage in Vicksburg.

Will be there, I'll be reenacting.. while I'm there.
Will you be joining us for any of the tour? If so please message me your contact information for our attendee list. Looking for names, email address and phone number of anyone willing to provide it.

God willing and the creek don't rise
Down here we say "Good Lord willing and the river don't rise" I guess you have been VERY busy with work?

This is really shaping up!
I hope to show up and meet all of you !

God willing and the creek don't rise

I thought I would share a historic tid bit about that phrase.

All my life . . . I've heard Baptist, Methodist, and other Ministers say this .

It has nothing to do about a small stream of water.

It's about the Creek Indian Nation 'rising up' against the settlers in what is now Alabama
during the War of 1812.

Google Fort Mims Massacre for details.

Sorry to go off topic.
