22nd Kentucky Infantry

Yeah, Col. Lindsey recruited men from around Frankfort and camped them at Camp Prentice (named for one of the editors of the Louisville Journal). Lindsey and his recruits were in Frankfort from October to early December where they headed toward Louisa where it consolidated with another organization and became a full regiment and then named the 22nd Kentucky.
So he got to stay a little bit with America before he left. They married late September 1861.

Hi, it's me again, still looking for grandfather John Meredith. I need a little help. I found a link to a grave site in Murfreesboro, Tennessee for a John Meredith, but it has Indiana on the stone. My John was left and discharged Dec. 1862 in Memphis of an injury. The John on the gravestone died Dec the following year. Is it possible he joined an Indiana regiment later after his regiment, the 22nd, had gone? Someone has put company F, 75th Indiana infantry, under the picture but I can't find much on it or any connections. There was a John in the 46th Indiana but can't make a connection to the area of either of these men. You may have access to more sites than I do. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks. https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/123121154

I will try to do some more digging this weekend if I have time. Something to consider, I recently used @RhinehartRoots to get medical card records and something you may consider in the future. It's possible he joined another regiment after some time, but he doesn't have a pension file associated with the 22nd Ky that I have found, which would also list another regiment he would have served in. His medical cards may give an indication of the nature of his injury and the reason for discharge.

Thank you Huskerblitz. No need to bother yourself. I just wanted your opinion if the grave may be him. But what you said about the medical cards made sense. Sometimes an expert is needed when you keep hitting that brick wall. I'll keep digging. Lol. Thank you for helping so many with the information you have that family members may not have had before.

No bother at all. It provides me with more information about the regiment and the men the more I dig so I'd also be helping myself better understand the men of the regiment. I'm curious to see what I can find out. The medical cards (I think) are $15. Not bad really if that was an avenue you wanted to pursue.

I'm thinking he probably died and I believe his wife died between 1862 and 1870. There wasn't a pension filed for him that I can find either. I may never find what happened to them. I would like to find that link to his parents though. Can't find them either. I just can't make that definitive connection with people in the area he said he came from. Thanks again. You're awesome.

Well, definitely not the same guy. That John Meredith enlisted and joined the 75th Indiana in July of 1862 and was from Jay County, Indiana. Your John Meredith was listed as present with the 22nd Ky in July.

To be honest, I am having a hard time tracking him down. How sure are you about the dates you gave? I can find an 11-year-old John Meradith living with the Ashworth family in Hart County in 1850. There is a John R Meredith living in Crittenden, Ky about the same age. Having a hard time finding what should be simple info like marriage record or stuff like that for either John or America.

Yeah, I found the same 11 year old John with the Ashworth family. It may be him, but I can't prove it or make a connection. Next door to the Ashworth family is...William Merideth, age 40, Elizabeth, age 80, and Mariah Buckada, age 30. I have researched these and still can't connect them to my family. I think I tracked the John in Crittenden and it wasn't him. The birth year I got was 1840 and birth place was Hart Co. Ky. was what he gave on his marriage license. I usually go up or down a couple of years when searching because as you know, census record birth dates are not always correct. Thank you for trying to help me.

On second look, I didn't exclude the John in Crittenden Co. But both John's are gone from Hart and Crittenden by 1860 census. Find a grave has nothing. But John Meredith was in Franklin Co in 1862 and married America and was in the 22nd. I just don't know which one. Lol. I so wish I could have a break through on him. Thank again. You're a great guy.

My GGG Grandfather was Edward Gill in Company B of the 22nd Kentucky. All I know is that he died (likely of dysentery) shortly after the Battle of Vicksburg. The information I have is he died on a "hospital boat on the Mississippi". When I have a chance I will share the only picture I know of him on here. I know his actual name was Edward McGill but shortened to Gill most likely due to Irish not being very welcome to the U.S. during that time period.

That would be awesome to see a picture of him!

Edward Gill, 33 at date of enlistment, died Aug. 17, 1863, of chronic diarrhea, according to what I have for him.

I will try to get it on here when I get home. Thats about all the info I have of him. I imagine there was some notification made to his family and I've wondered why he was buried in Illinois when I'm under the impression he lived in Kentucky closer to W. Virginia.

Mound City was a site of a large hospital so my guess is he died en route to the hospital and was buried when they docked.

Thank you for mentioning his burial place. I was able to quickly search and find his memorial on FindaGrave and added his name to my Virtual Cemetery for men of the 22nd Kentucky.

I noticed its near Cairo, Illinois and that was a depot point for those troops moving South to attack Vicksburg. I am hoping someday to make a weekend and visit up that way to get a look around and visit his gravesite. Someday I also plan to visit Vicksburg. I would like to catch a Vicksburg reenactment if they ever get to do them again. Do you know if there are any groups portraying the 22nd Kentucky by chance?
