Hello gentlemen,

I have a question regarding bayonet scabbards. Was the type of scabbard shown below used with the Springfield 1863 musket in the ACW ?

I have seen the scabbard with the frog attachment in many pictures with the Springfield but was not sure if either scabbard may have been used.

Thanks for any information that could be provided.

Below is the standard bayonet for the CW Springfield. The top one in your photo is for the Springfield trapdoor. Its hard to see the rest on the bottom one but it appears to be a straight belt loop also Indian War but we can always get a second opinion. paging @Ralph Heinz and @Package4

The M1863 would have been issued with a (7) seven rivet scabbard of the type below, what you show are scabbards for the trapdoor as indicated by others.

7th Wisconsin - Even though there was more cost involved in the production of the M-1873, etc., scabbards, the cost was offset by the highly increased longevity of the scabbard units themselves. By the time they developed the last type with the brass hook for the Mills Belt, as shown above, they were nearly indestructible.

They are indeed.. I come across them all the time at auctions, last one just two days ago.. still in great usable shape.

Hello @Frederick14Va haven't seen you around here in a while, so nice to see you back, always enjoy your contributions.
Thank you Sir, wasnt sure if I would still know anyone on here, much less anyone remembering me... Old PC got fried in a thunderstorm and all the automatic log-in data and links fried along with it.. Lifes trials and starting up a new business venture at the time decided to take break from most online venues for a bit. Didnt mean to be away quite this long.. Thanks again...

Yup, life happens sometimes and we all come and go at times, nice to see you back. I'll be in your neck of the woods in October for Cedar Creek if you're going.
