I found this contemporary account of her, by one of her sailors, in the book, "Centennial Celebration of the Confederate Victory":
"I served aboard the CSS Yankee Slayer in 1865. I was captain of the Number Five gun, "Dupont's Doom". Oh, the mischief we caused that day when we rammed the Wabash! Scratched our paint something awful. Gideon Wells himself was aboard her. Never did find his body. Them yankees hollered something terrible. Guess they didn't like cold water. Such a sight! Sank the Colorado too, with one broadside on our way in. Our 15" Brook Rifles were devilishly effective. Curious. I always thought oak floated. We were back in Charleston by four. The Mint Juleps flowed like rain. I proposed to Miss Aura Lee that evening. Her, I carried by boarding!"
