Hard to get good help these days

I'm currently researching a veteran who spent some time in Oregon and who died at Andersonville. I've ordered his service record but thought I'd also see if the Andersonville site folk had any information on his time there (figuring his service record likely ends at his capture). The prison records are available on Familysearch but lots of the pages aren't really readable but I figured somebody has transcribed all that stuff over the years. Anyway the site says they'll look up records so I used their link and asked for whatever they had.

Today - a month later (and a Sunday) - I got a response from a woman who said they didn't have any records for my guy. This was very strange as he has a stone at the national cemetery (among other pieces of evidence). So, I immediately responded with a link to his FindAGrave memorial which has a good photo of the stone - with his burial number - and his VA burial record; no response so far (been several hours now).

Oh well.

What’s his name and maybe the state he fought for?

I posted about him once before but he is:

John H. Hoffman
pvt Co C 86th Indiana Infantry

I know about all there is about him other than his service record (on order but that takes months) but was just hoping maybe there'd be some little detail in the Andersonville records. What I found on FamilySearch is his death date and cause (pneumonia). I'm hoping his service record says something about where and when he was taken prisoner.

I discovered that the brother of his wife was in the same company and also was taken prisoner but he escaped, returned to Union lines, and survived the war. It's a fun conjecture to think that they were captured together. At the time of his BIL's capture (a biographical sketch noted the date and place) the regiment was in winter camp so I suspect the BIL got caught while foraging. That was mentioned in the regimental history as having been a real risk.

Just have to wait and see what his service record has to say.
