In another post, we saw how the flags have been planted at Monocacy National Battlefield, one for each casuality, North and South. So, if you'd like to stop by for the Memorial Day ceremonies tomorrow, the park is open all day and this is the schedule of events:

Monday 27 May 2019
  • 11:00 am – 11:30 am – Memorial Day Program – Visitor Center
  • 11:00 am – 11:30 am – Standard battle orientation – Visitor Center Museum if requested
  • 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm – Standard Ranger’s Choice Program – Visitor Center
  • 3:00 pm – 3:30 pm – Memorial Day Program – Visitor Center
The 11:00 and 3:00 programs will include the Monocacy Field Music and 87th PA Infantry Color Guard (several members of the 87th PA reenacting group have ancestors who fought at Monocacy. Also, one of the park rangers in the ceremony is descended from a soldier who fought at Monocacy.)

There will also be a nationwide minute of silence exactly at 3:00 pm Local Time tomorrow. If you can't make it to a Memorial Day ceremony, please observe this minute of silence wherever you are in remembrance of the men and women who gave the last full measure of devotion for our country.

If you're in the area, please stop by for a very special and meaningful event!

We had a great day at Monocacy performing Civil War tunes for the Memorial Day ceremonies, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. In between, we played outside the Visitor's Center and then visited the monument for the 87th PA.

Here's a video of us warming up for the morning ceremony, posted by the park on their Facebook page:

Below is a group shot of the 87th PA Color Guard, the Monocacy Field Music, and the ranger who invited us. The 2,200 flags behind us--planted with the help of some CW Talk forum members and their families--are in memory of all those who fought and died in "The Battle that Saved Washington."

This is first time they've had Field Music and a Color Guard in the ceremony, and we will definitely be back next year!

My 8th grade son & I were just there a couple weeks ago. He needed a topic for his civil war history project & chose Monocacy. My civil war loving heart leaped when he said, "Dad I need you to take me to a battlefield so I can do some research."

Here he is by the Thomas farm house, adjacent to the epicenter of major fighting.
