The weather does not always cooperate when you are traveling. Show us a photo that was not taken on a sunny day. This is Antietam in the fog,

Fort Macon, Guarding Beaufort Inlet in North Carolina, is an excellent example of a brick fortress. A Parrot Rifle cannon is an excellent example of why brick fortresses became obsolete. The fort has been restored beautifully. If you are ever on Emerald Isle Fort Macon State Park is a great place to spend a few hours. As children, we liked to explore the moat and it's dungeons! The beach at the park is undeveloped, the inlet offers good fishing.

My visit to Lookout in May, 2014 left a good bit to be desired, but at least it wasn't completely socked in like it can be here above the clouds...

Gettysburg in August of that same year was also wet, at least part of the time - note the water standing in the ditch along Confederate Avenue on Seminary Ridge above; however, it made for some dramatic twilight photos from Little Round Top below:

Although purists can complain that it's not the right period, the above is a foggy, rainy day at French-built Crown Point on the shores of Lake Champlain in upstate New York.

Also from the same trip is an early morning scene at Lake George Village above; below, one of my favorite photos ever - I have NO idea what caused the light to react in the way it did, but it's all natural light - notice the "correct" exposure of the benches, signage, and pavilion.

Great picture! I absolutely *love* the mist and fog like that when I'm out traveling, though cloudy with light rain is preferable when I'm walking on the battlefield so I can see some things. I fell in love with Gettysburg my first visit in September 2010--it was raining the two days I was there (I canceled my next stop of a few days in Chancellorsville so I could go back to Gettysburg for the rest of the trip).

This is at Lookout Mt about a year and a half ago. Weather started out ok that morning but then the storm clouds rolled in and it poured on us. Made for a good picture though!

That's beautiful. Makes me miss Lookout Mt even more than I did before! I think the last time I was there was in 2013. I'm hoping to go back either this fall or perhaps the next if I decide to go somewhere a bit closer this year, I was thinking either a Shenandoah Valley trip or back to Manassas.

Manassas is is divine, haven’t been to the Valley yet but it’s at the top of my list! I have friends in Winchester and I’d love to get out that way soon

Fort Ticonderoga 004.jpg

Fort Ti is at left center of this photo taken from atop Mount Defiance (also known ominously as Rattlesnake Mountain); Lake Champlain divides it on the New York side from Mount Independence at right on the Vermont side. During the Revolution a pontoon bridge connected the two promontories in the center of the picture.

Not on that same trip since in October it was already past their as usual ridiculously short tourist season so they were already closed down tight as a drum; fortunately I'd been there previously, spending a couple of days there and on nearby Mount Independence across the lake in Vermont.

Above, Mount Defiance as seen from the ramparts of the fort; below the restored headquarters where Ethan Allen and Benedict Arnold demanded the surrender by the tiny British garrison in 1775.
