America Flirted with Legalized Prostitution During the Civil War

He depopulated 400 or so Textile Workers from Marietta, GA. Young Woman. North depopulated a large section of MO. Sherman floated the idea. Might of been on one of his Psychological Breaks? We will never know. Suspect he was talking about Southerners in his way? Also charged them with Treason. He must of felt Threatened by these young Ladies.
Any documentation that Sherman felt threatened by females many of them just good Southern women trying to feed their children?

...Morally Superior argument is yours and your Single Causer Friends

"Single Causer" is not a thing (Google it). If you want to invent something and have it stick it would have to be something that actually is. Hardly anyone claims a single cause. Why shoot blanks? Try "Primary Causer." *

Prostitutes were more often called by a name other than that, names that people back then better related to.

* But keep in mind what's happened to "Lost Causer," a long-established thing (hundreds of Google hits). A while back many plainly admitted to that label. But lately (or should I say lamely) few do anymore. Apparently it's become too publicly embarrassing in the setting of an increasingly informed populace and cell phone cameras. Believe it or not, in frustration one reaction has been to promote that the term "Lost Cause" was only ever something used by Yankees! I know, right?

Nothing of this scale was ever performed against Southern population of America.
I cannot tell you the population numbers involved, but Union Gen. Ewing did, indeed, depopulate more than three and one half counties of Missouri in 1863. This has nothing to do with prostitution nor its legality, but it is directly relevant to your statement.

Ah yes, the bad "Yankee" Sherman, who had before the war been married in the South (D.C.), had been stationed in the South (Georgia and South Carolina), saw active service in the South (Florida), went civilian as a lawyer in the South (Missouri) and was an Academy Supervisor in the South (Louisiana). Southerners Braxton Bragg (North Carolina) and George Thomas (Virginia) had invested with Sherman before the war. And Sherman had granted his defeated Confederate foes in the South far too lenient terms, so much so that Washington had to roll them back.

An enemy of the South? pfft. He was an enemy of the Confederacy, which was the true enemy of the South (apparently considered to be such by about half the population of the South at the time). You know, in some ways Sherman was more of a Southerner than some Confederates.

Also @Dilandu ,
Let's tell the full story that after about a year the displayed people were allowed to move back to the home's.

Well, most of them didn't have homes to return to. Most homes had been burned. But some could return to their land--if they could pay the taxes on it, which was impossible for some after a year without crops. I wonder about the prostitutes of the original thread topic. I wonder what they had for shelter after their "deportation" was reversed. Surely they weren't all living on the sidewalk 24-7. But perhaps many were.

So far no one has claimed that the women were homeless. A viable prostitute would require shelter.
Does on the Confederate side didn't seem to mind Lawrence being burned down so yeah war is heck.

They pop up very easily. We have had previous discussions of this issue on Confederate Provost Marshal's by @major bill . Hopefully he can link them for you. Honestly how hard is it to Google "Civil War prostitution in Richmond VA".

I agree with Patrick H.
Regardless of my opinion or yours, maybe you should follow the same rules that you demand of others.

A reminder: the topic is legalized prostitution during the ACW. Please stay on-topic.

...it seems any merest / marginal / far-fetched / silly scrap of an account that can be used to "defend" the slave South just has to be played. It's apparently reached that level of desperation. One can't even own up to being Lost Cause anymore, it's just too socially embarrassing. Notice the latest attempts to literally imply that the "so-called" Lost Cause was only ever a thing created by "Yankees" to deride Southerners (meaning white Southerners).

It seems every month now we hear of yet another symbol of the slave South that's being removed in a too-late attempt to achieve historical balance, to tell the full story of Southern heritage and not just its worst four years. As these symbols come down we will see increased desperation and even more marginal projections of slave-South morality. It's frustrating for self-appointed "defenders" of the slave South because there are so few symbols of slavery in the North to be taken down to "get even." Tilting at windmills.

And after all that, what most of us here want is to honor the folks that were caught up in the Civil War: soldiers North and South, their families and the black population and their families. Most of us realize there's a difference between playing Civil War and understanding Civil War.

Since it has been “found acceptable” that Legalized Prostitution During the Civil War had something to do with Southern interpretation and acceptance of its history may we assume that the syphilitic president of the US baleful influence on history had its genesis in some bordello or in some other place of degeneracy?

How did people manage to turn a discussion of prostitution during the war into a battle for the moral high ground between north & south?

News flash- both sides fielded large armies of men. Where large groups of men are, one can find prostitution. This isn’t a north vs. south thing. Prostitutes plied their trade in southern cities as well as northern. Unsavory characters, criminals, and prostitutes followed both armies on the march. Guess what? Gay men served in both armies as well, GASP! pearl clutching, etc...

You seems to have pretty strange assumption of what is "depopulate".

While it was probably technically feasible to remove 5 millions of white Southern population elsewhere (where exactly?), the scale of the logistical problem would be enormous. There were some large-scale deportation of national minorities in our (Russian) history - like during & after World War 2 - but nothing on such scale. Considering the limits of the logistic available to mid-XIX century USA (and need to put all those peoples you removed somewhere else), it is highly improbable that Sherman might actually suggest anything like that, except as a joke.

Why is it that every time a Southerner says something outrageous it is taken as spot on historically accurate -- they said it, they said it, just read what they said -- they said it. Yet, let a Yankee say something equally outrageous or worse and then it was taken out of context or only a joke.
