The Yangtze River Patrol

I clicked on the link about the USS Waachusett and it states the Waachusett didn't serve in Asia until post ACW.

The USS Wachusett could not have been part of the antebellum patrols as she wasn't built yet...

"The first Wachusett, one of seven screw sloops-of-war authorized by Congress in February 1861, was laid down by the Boston Navy Yard, Mass., in June 1861; launched on 10 October; sponsored by Miss Mary C. Frothingham; and commissioned at the Boston Navy Yard on 3 March 1862..."

Opium at the time was legal as some are eager to remind us.

It might have been legal to the growers / shippers / wholesale sellers but not for the end-user or in the country they lived in...

'In 1839, the Daoguang Emperor, rejecting proposals to legalize and tax opium, appointed viceroy Lin Zexu to go to Canton to halt the opium trade completely.'

'The Opium War, 1840–1842: Barbarians in the Celestial Empire in the early part of the nineteenth century and the way by which they forced the gates ajar' by Peter Ward Fay

'Lin wrote to Queen Victoria an open letter in an appeal to her moral responsibility to stop the opium trade.'

From 1854 to 1949 the US Navy had a Squadron that patrolled the Yangtze River in China before and during the ACW.
There is a Wiki Article " Yangtze River Patrol".
The article doesn't say how large the US Naval commitment was. The USN did maintain it's patrol during the ACW.

@ebg12 ,
You might enjoy this thread. As you will see in the thread during the Nineteenth Century the actual US naval deployment was rather limited at best unlike the claim from @uaskme . It appears well under one thousand sailors served in China during the antebellum and ACW through the Reconstruction era.
