Hoosier born, raised and educated, I left home to study Law at Harvard, then practiced law in Ohio. At the outbreak of the war, I volunteered and was commissioned a Major; later I was promoted to Colonel. I was among the first U. S. troops to enter Knoxville, Tennessee in September 1863. After the war, I returned home; practiced law and entered politics. I was rewarded with a long career as a diplomat.I'm not that well known today, but my two better-known grandsons also reached high levels in government service.
Who am I?
Who were my grandsons?

At Vicksburg, Major-General Peter Osterhaus, frustrated by rebel artillery fire, ordered a twelve-pounder howitzer brought forward and shouted to the Southerners in his heavy accent, “‘You shoost stay there and I give you hellsmell." He sighted the gun and hit the rebel gun, overturning it, and yelled, "Didn’t I told you I make you hell smell?’” That earned the general a dubious new nickname, “Old Hell Smell.”

Bonus: Colonel John W. Foster was the grandfather of CIA director Allen Dulles and Secretary of State John Foster Dulles.

Peter Osterhaus (1823-1917), a former Prussian Army officer. Finding his men pinned down by a rebel gun during an assault May 22, 1863, at Vicksburg, Osterhaus ordered a twelve-pound howitzer brought up. He angrily shouted at the rebels, "You shoost stay there and I give you hell smell!" He sighted the howitzer himself, fired and destroyed the rebel gun. Celebrating, he shouted, "Didn't I told you I make you hell smell?"

He was Peter Joseph Osterhaus. He ordered a 12 pound Canon forward. He said " you shoost stay there and I give you hell smell. He sighted the Canon and hit a confederate Canon knocking it upside down. He went on to say Didn't I told you that I make you hell smell. And thus the nickname stuck.

Major General Peter Osterhaus

During the Vickburg Campaign, Osterhaus, annoyed at a Confederate battery firing on his men brought up a 12 lb. howitzer and shouted at the Confederates:
"You should stay there and I'll give you hell-smell". He opened fire with his howitzer and made a direct hit on a piece of Confederate artillery.

Regular question

1) You are "Union Warhorse" Peter Osterhaus

2) You earned your nickname because you threatened the enemy that if they continued to shoot their guns at your men, you would give them "hell smell". Then, when a shot from your own 12 pound howitzer hit a rebel gun and turned it bottom side up, you said "Didn't I told you I make you hell smell"

Peter J. Osterhaus was nicknamed Old Hell Smell. Per the biography entitled, "Yankee Warhorse A Biography of Major General Peter Osterhaus" by Mary Bobbitt Townsend, "The attack point Osterhaus had picked turned out to be a bad choice in a situation in which there were no good choices, so he ordered Lindsey to hold his position. Any further advance was out of the question. The men were pinned down, showers of bullets and canister “throwing up sprays of dirt not unlike a furious hailstorm on a dusty road” and pelting the unfortunate soldiers who were most exposed.120 Osterhaus, frustrated, ordered a twelve-pounder howitzer brought forward and shouted to the Southerners, “‘You shoost stay there and I give you hell smell.’ He sighted the gun and hit it [a rebel gun], turning it bottom side up, and excitedly said: ‘Didn’t I told you I make you hell smell?’” That earned the general a dubious new nickname, “Old Hell Smell,” that his veterans still remembered fifty years later."
