The Photographic Album by J B Lippincott

Yes, I have seen that particular pose reproduced somewhere before. It was common to take several different photos during sittings, so it's always possible to discover a previou

sly unknown one so you are right to wonder.

About your most recent ones, of course Maj. Gen. William Rosecrans is identified and the others are also known "personalities" too. The civilian next to him is Judge Joseph Holt, a crony and employee of Edwin Stanton's at the War Department - Holt was one of those responsible for the prosecution of such "war criminals" as were tried after the war like the Commandant of Andersonville Prison Capt. Henry Wirz, and the so-called Conspirators in the Lincoln Assination. Below them are two naval officers, at left Admiral David G. Farragut; unfortunately, I don't recognize the one at right, though it *may* be Samuel F. DuPont - but I'll bet @AndyHall or @Mark F. Jenkins will!
Some more photos ...

I BELIEVE the building is the U. S. Treasury in Washington, D. C., but am not sure; the first person is Maj. Gen. Benjamin Butler, a highly controversial figure who was variously a Democratic Congressman from Massachusetts who was promoted early in the war far above his qualifications and abilities. He: commanded at the first "battle" (and Union defeat) of the war at Big Bethel; as commander at Fortress Monroe coined the term "contraband" to describe runaway slaves who he in turn refused to return to their masters; led the army troops in the capture of New Orleans where he gained the nickname "Spoons" for supposedly stealing the property of Confederates and Confederate sympathizers and issued the notorious "Woman Order"; commanded the troops sent to suppress the New York Draft Riots in July, 1863; failed utterly in attacking Richmond as part of Grant's 1864 Overland Campaign getting "bottled up" at Bermuda Hundred; and lastly failed to capture Fort Fisher on the North Carolina coast in Feb. 1865 thereby finally ending his military career. During Reconstruction as a Mass. Republican senator he took a leading role in the impeachment of President Andrew Johnson. (He was also badly cross-eyed, resulting usually in photos like this one where he is shown only in profile.)

The remaining two I do not recognize.

And finally, my favorite photo in this album, can this officer be General Custer? The young man is very similar to the young Lincoln. I look forward to your comments and opinions./QUOTE]
In a word, absolutely and unequivocally NO. I think all the photos on this entire page are likely just more friends and family members.

And what is the inscription under the photo?
I can make out Yours Truly, Jno (19th Century abbreviation for John) C. Carf___? Carfund(?)__ (makes no sense); Carfrin__?? Or maybe it's Corfu__??? With the last letter or more obscured by the page it's too hard to tell with any certainty. I will add that his double-breasted uniform with evenly-spaced buttons indicates he is a field officer - that is, a major, lieutenant colonel, or colonel. The fellow in the last photo is wearing the single-breasted coat of a company-grade officer, lieutenant, first lieutenant, or captain.

More likely civilian friends or relatives, other than the unknown officer who is from his uniform and shoulder insignia only a captain.

Something the topic has become boring. Very few discussions.

It's not at all boring- it's difficult to discuss these when the ID isn't known although given time it's almost guaranteed someone will find this thread and be able to ID quite a few.

Were you asking whether or not the young man in a suit was Lincoln's son? You know, can't say no because who knows what photos are out there we've never seen? It isn't Tad- he had far different features.

I'm inclined to say no? The young man from the album has extremely deeply set eyes and IMO his face is longer.

Not boring, it just takes a long time to search through all the available photos. I am still looking, still interested.

We will wait for someone to truly recognize.
