A forensic examination of Jennie Wade's death yields intriguing new revelations

Do you think her death was intentional or act of war? Has the fatal Minnie ball ever been retrieved?

I forgot to answer your second question. The fatal Minie ball was recovered from Jennie's corset. It passed through her back below her left scapula and went through her heart. I don't know the fate of the Minie ball.

I believe Jennie was killed intentionally but only because she was mistaken for a Union picket. But I believe your question relates to motive. I evaluated the possibility that Jennie was targeted for aiding the Union. Although this is possible, I do not feel that she was assassinated. There were a number of young women who also baked bread for Union troops in Gettysburg and in adjoining towns but they were ignored by the Confederates. One Alabamian account indicates that they did not know women (Jennie, mom, sister) were occupying the residence and both sides (Feds and Confeds) had urged the women to vacate the premises for safety during the early phases of the battle. There were also articles of war that forbade soldiers from injuring civilians or damaging or stealing goods. While not every soldier followed command, I believe the percentage was quite high and there are accounts of Confederates aiding each other and even opposing troops. Hope this helps and great question. Best, John
Thank you for this. You know it's funny but at the same time I've been going back and forth with @byron ed regarding my Molly Tynes post about the exact same subject regarding innocent women! If you care to follow the "back and forth" banter you're input would be much appreciated! Regardless...people interested in this most important passionate war may never agree...but I'd like to think that we can "agree to disagree'" especially since NONE of us were there to experience or chronicle first hand the horrors of this war.

I'll certainly read your post and look forward to it. I'm afraid I'm still learning my way around this website. How do I find it? Perhaps a simple search using Molly Tynes as the subject?

...yet there you clearly proclaimed to have the POV of southern women associated with the Tynes incident. Which is it then?

Hello. I'm unsure who you directed your question to - Belle or me. If it's directed towards me, I haven't read the Molly Tynes post and made no link/reference to the incident. By way of clarity, my forensic study indicates that Jennie Wade was in plain view of her killer, but mistaken for a Union troop and as such killed. Thank you for your interest.

Look … it appears from your 2019 POV that unless you can prove you are a 200 year old Southern woman who lived during the war you have NO POV regarding this matter either. Have some green beer this weekend and "chill out" and please take your anti--Confederate rhetoric and go "stalk" some one else. This conversation is over.

That's right. Without direct first-person evidence we only have only projections and opinions, and it's merely polite to declare which, imho.

..."chill out" and please take your anti--Confederate rhetoric and go...

?? In order for anybody to be anti-Confederate, there would have to be a Confederacy. There isn't. And what would be the point in being anti-something that had already been roundly defeated decades ago. People play-act at being Confederate and that's ok, because they certainly realize that as U.S. citizens they would be considered a traitor to it today, and that keeps them grounded.

We reenactors are all about the play-acting, but (sigh) on Monday we're back to being adults.

i'd reall appreciate it if the two of you could keep that out of this threat as it is in no way related to the topic. thx in advance.

It is, rather, related to the topic directly. But no worries, as we are about done with it. Still, we've been discussing the very event, place and people pertinent to the OP, the aspect of it regarding how it is we can (or cannot) determine how the participants in that event may have felt.

Other posters have been liking the posts, if you have not. If you have anything to add on this aspect of the OP, this would be the time because, as noted, we're about done with it.
