Was reading tonite and came across this passage "Texas was one vast artillery park of fine French and Austrian cannon run through the blockade to Galveston and Matomoros" What would the Austrian cannons have been?

It would make sense i guess for the foreign ones to end up in Texas, a neutral port like Matomoros wouldn't be as limited to cargo weight as shallow draft blockade runners

General JO Shelby Undefeated Rebel, its mentioned at wars end as he begins trip to Mexico, as I pointed out in another thread theres references to 6 French guns being used at Palmetto Ranch in Texas, hadn't heard of reference to Austrian Before, but see Bill has it covered they were imported as well

That Austrian cannon were imported by the Confederates has been discussed here before, and imports of limited numbers of them east of the Mississippi are well documented. But, not your reference to Texas being "one vast artillery park of fine French and Austrian cannon." I wondered specifically where you had read that. I've never seen that quote before, and am very interested in the source.

Well considering less then a year before Shelby had been part of an expedition ordered to try to take a fortified St Louis with no artillery bigger then a 6 pdr, and only 20 of those…....it wouldn't have took a lot to be considered "fine" in regards to artillery, or a vast park for that matter either

Please...What is your source/citation?

For what? the orginal quote? I gave it already, J O Shelby Undefeated Rebel, for the artillery used during Prices raid? Prices Lost Campaign among other accounts of the raid, For my supposition it would make sense to run to Matomoros? This details how it boomed during the CW due to arms/cotton trade, and being a neutral port just across the border of Texas. Plus Galveston was still open, 22 runs were made into it in 1865, at this point the T-M had shrunk to basicly Texas.....whatever was being brought in wasnt going to go far...….
