Is there a register somewhere listing the ships used by the US and CS navies during the war? I know of the Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships (available online here), but are there alternatives to supplement the DANFS?

Sir, I'm not sure you can get any better than DANFS for one stop shopping. All of the sites I've been to - good and bad - link back to DANFS. The navsource site linked in post #2 is great for the pics, when available.

Was there info you were looking for that wasn't being satisfied by DANFS?

Nothing specific really, the DANFS is about 50 years old in its most recent edition I believe, and I wanted to see if any new information has become available.

Out of curiosity, I've noticed there's always a number in superscript before your customary signature. Is there any particular significance to this?

Understood sir - while individual vessels' histories have been fleshed out since the last DANFS edition, (some by members of this board), I don't know of any site or publication that has collected those updates in a ship-by-ship continuation of what DANFS provided the foundation for. (OK, now that I think about it, The Naval War sub-forum of CWT is a great collection of information on ACW vessels, from the famous to the obscure) Other than doing a search on individual names for more recently 'discovered' data, I'm not sure there is a over-all listing that bests DANFS at this time.

Just a personal tracking metric.

This old newspaper clipping found in a Oct 1861 Galveston newspaper has a long list of USN ships, their general location, and ships under construction. As the war dragged on others were added. I cannot vouch for its accuracy, but it may give you a list to compare with other sources.

So far as I know the Special Appendix to the Civil War Naval Chronology, itself a "condense" from DANFS is still the most comprehensive listing of Confederate ships although as has been said it is 50 years old now. more recent research may have corrected some of the "facts" but by and large I believe it to be as accurate as maybe you are going to get. Unless someone sets out to repeat and up date the piece - no I'm not volunteering, before any of you bright souls ask !

Perhaps I should also add Paul H Silverstone's "Warships of the Civil War navies" is a reasonable volume too - although it's CSN section once again is not 100% factually correct the ships are there.
