Favorite battle

I didn't remember it either, till I saw it again on the Disney Channel in the 1980's.
I watched it last night with my long suffering husband, who only laughed as I corrected errors and paused to show him what the real Mosby, Stuart, and Fitz Lee looked like. I was particularily amused by the reference to meeting up with Bedford Forrest!!!!!!!!!!

I’m curious to hear what your favorite battles to study are? I’d have to say the two I’m most interested in are Gettyburg and Antietam.
I'm most interested in the Battle of the Crater. My gg grandfather Adj. William B. Phillips of the 2nd. PA Provisional Heavy Artillery was one of six officers of the regiment to be captured in the battle. The 2nd. PA Provisional was the first regiment into the crater following the mine explosion. My ancestors letters can be read at: www.wbp2ndpaha.wordpress.com.

The one most overlooked battles and most important from both Union and Confederacy ,Vicksburg. From the Union it opens the Ms.River for transportation of goods from interior to the Gulf .The fall divides the West from the East Confederacy there by depriving the Confederacy a port to transport military and civilian supplies from the west .The victory at Vicksburg releases the army of the West and Sherman down to Ga. then to North Carolina.Grant as commander of all Union forces to the East, and releases the Union army to destroy Lee and his Army of Va. would mark the beginning of the end of the war. While the two battles are famous for the generals involved ,Vicksburg marks the turning point with the above reasons.Vicksburg would not celebrate the 4th of July afterwards.Another reason is the fact of what the population of the area endured for those months. The strength and endurance that Grant and his army also demonstrated shows what Lee and his staff would be facing.

I am drawn to Fredricksburg. I know it was a Union route, but there are so many "what-ifs" with that battle. To think if the pontoons would have actually arrived in town. What if Burnside listened to Hancock about fording the river? What if Burnside just redraws from the field all together?

Chancellorsville without a doubt, planning another trip in May! The book is fascinating with all the what ifs as Lee was caught with his pants down but still out smarted Hooker!
