Seeking info on this unit from Wilkes County. Lt.Colonel James Calvin Land of the 93rd ( Wilkes County ) regiment NC Militia. was commissioned in March 1859. At the outbreak of the Civil War, the NC Militia units were absorbed into the home & railroad guards. While his brother, Thomas served from the Seven Days to Five Forks and was twice severally wounded, James never left North Carolina, and I expect was hardly ever out of Wilkes County. A lot of his duties consisted of bringing in conscripts to the various Camps of Instruction ( Camp Vance, Camp Holmes, etc. ) I've one document showing he delivered " 21 negroes " to the Confederate base and hospital at Salisbury, NC. about the same time it became a Camp of Instruction after Kirk's destruction of Camp Vance. Another document showing he was reimbursed for bringing in a deserter from a Virginia regiment Is there a roster of all the men in this unit? I have only one other name, Lieutenant James Linville Bumgarner.

Glenn, my initial searches haven't found anything, except his Fold3 CSR, which I assume you have? I noticed he's filed under Miscellaneous rather than NC or Officers, and it doesn't look like his regiment has their own folder on there.

Just out of curiosity, do you know anything about this Bumgarner guy? I was trying to find something on him to see if it would help, and I noticed the contemporary person listed as a contact on a genealogy website has a surname in my family, Rash. I don't offhand know of any Rashes in Wilkes Co (all mine are either Buncombe or Madison), but apparently his sister married a Rash in Wilkes Co in 1860. That piqued my curiosity. . . .

Hope we can find out more on the regiment!

Glenn, interesting post on Bumgarner. Since he was only a little shy of thirty, I wonder why he was just in the Home Guard. Was he exempted from regular service because of being a minister? Don't get me wrong, I think he should have been.

That, and probably some influence with Zeb Vance the NC War Governor that was from Wilkes I believe. Here's a link about James Calvin Land's brother. They were 4 x 1st cousins of mine.

END WILKES COUNTY MILITIA OFFICER LISTING

COLONEL COMMANDING OFFICER

HORTON, ALEXANDER H. Area – ELK CREEK

Colonel Horton was a resident of Wilkes County and enlisted and mustered as a Private on 6/12/1861, into Company C 26th NC Infantry, "The Wilkes Volunteers". On 8/6/1861 he was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant. On 8/27/1861 he became Captain of Company C. He was discharged on 4/21/1862 after failing to be reelected. He obviously returned to Wilkes County and was appointed by Governor Vance as Colonel of the 93rd where he served through the War. The 26th was decimated at Gettysburg, having well over 100 killed including their Colonel, over 500 wounded, and over 200 captured. There were probably times when Colonel Horton considered what might have been had he won reelection to the Captaincy of Company C. https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/76557797/alexander-hamilton-horton

I wonder if I am related to him? A Horton in Western NC. That would be strange, our two relatives commanding the same unit. Of course if related to me, he would have won the election and been killed..lol.

James Calvin Land was born JUL 14, 1837 in Wilkes County, N.C. He died April 23, 1925, in Maury County, Tennessee. James was the youngest of 9 children born to William Thomas Land (brother of my 3 x great-grandfather) and Nancy Jane Carlton. William was a veteran of the North Carolina Militia during The War Of 1812. This probably influenced James to join the Militia during the 1850s. His great-grandmother Land (Anna Sumter) was a sister to Revolutionary War General Thomas "Gamecock" Sumter of South Carolina. His grandmother Land (Elizabeth Isbell) had six brothers that fought the British at King's Mountain. With the exception of an older sister that died in childhood, the other 7 siblings of James had their lives greatly affected and altered by the Civil War, in several cases very tragic ways.

With the exception of visiting his brother, Thomas in camp in Virginia, James probably never left "The Old North State" the entire war. His usual duties consisted of guarding railroads, chasing down deserters, bushwhackers, and outlaws in general, delivering conscripts to Camps of Instruction, and occasionally guarding Union prisoners on their way to prison camps.

Following the war, James married Nancy Waggoner (Wagnor) on November 4, 1868. Nancy's father, David Wagner was a Confederate sympathizer in heavily Unionist Carter County in upper east Tennessee. Nancy's brothers served in the Confederate Army. One was killed in Tennessee, another died soon after the war after spending years in a northern prison camp. David and Nancy's mother escaped the persecution of Unionist neighbors by resettling in Wilkes County. James and Nancy last appear together with James' older brother Thomas Charles Land (who never married) in the 1910 census of Wilkes County. Both James and Thomas are noted in the census as being Confederate veterans. Thomas died in 1912. Nancy died Dec.6, 1918. James last appears in the census of Maury County, Tennessee in 1920.
