Gettysburg, Where Was Your Ancestor?

After working on branches of the family tree the last couple of weeks I discovered two more cousins at Gettysburg.
John Durst 148 PVI Co D part of Hancock's Second Corps. They were moved to support Sickles and fought in the Wheatfield on July 2nd. On July 3rd they were to the left of the angle along cemetery ridge where John was shot in the leg. He died of his wounds Oct 6th at the Cotton Factory Hospital in Harrisburg PA.
George Kyler 84 PVI Co K was assigned to the supply train at Westminster and was evolved with transferring supplies to the battlefield.

I've just found this thread and I've already read half of it. It is amazing to look at history this way. Battles are also big blobs of men's stories and these make history feel alive. One of your southener ancestor was in Pickett's charge, another one was in the artillery's regiment and could see the courageous rebels charge under that severe fire and even small thing like the flag taker that died while he was retreating as last to taunt the opponets make me feel like I was there.

The thing I like even more is the coral description of it, who cares anymore about who was right and who was wrong in this case: all I see are courageous men that fought braverly and died for their ideal.

If this year we will have to do another presentation and the theme is free choice I would gladely try to pass this coral idea.

My family line was at Gettysburg as well as the family of my wife.
They did not necessarily volunteer for service in Union Army, but were more or less sorta conscripted.

Catherine Guinn - House became hospital
Abraham Spangler and George Spangler as well:

William Knarr, sometimes spelled Knerr? Grgrgrandfather was 6th US Cavalry, George Knarr ( counting Fairfield as Gettysburg! ), brothers and cousins seem to have decided the whole family should enlist. They're all over the place, at least 2 in the 50th - busy sieging Vicksburg July, 1863.

Thanks for the marker! Know very little of the 148th.

Whoa, that's crazy. And rats, you touched a chord in my memory that's elusive- Catherine's name comes up somewhere else. HANG on, is she the woman who chased a neighbor from her cellar with a broom? Seemed to feel he was cowardly.

There is a William Knarr 148 Co D from Center County who was killed at Chancellorsville 5/3/63. If that is your cousin he was in the same company as my cousin Franklin Durst who was also killed there. I also had one in the 50PVI at Vicksburg.

If you had an ancestor in a PA Regiment at Gettysburg you can search his name at this site run by Penn State. You can then link to a picture of that regiment on the PA Memorial. On the site you can zoom in to read all the names.

You've obviously been at this for awhile so do not mean to point you to a source with which you're already familiar- have you run into this? http://schuylkillhavenhistory.com/

Even if you don't have family from Schuylkill Haven, may find something pertaining to someone in your research. PA regiments have an astonishing amount of companies mustered in Schuylkill County- It's a crazy good site run by one man whose interest in local history is endless. Section on the ACW is awesome, tons of information.

Thanks, have not been there. Going to send it to my son as he is working on his girlfriend's family from the Ashland area.

Whoa, really? William's cousins, my uncles, 2 Knarr brothers in the 50th- plus my grgrgrandfather, Harrison Walton, then another grgrgrandfather made the 3rd Knarr brother in the 50th ( George ), for some reason mustered out of the 6th US Cavalry and enlisted in the 50th for the last few months of the war. All Schuylkill county boatmen. Hysterically, my son married someone whose grgrgrandfather was in the 50th PVI. Have a feeling my grandson will fail to be impressed, inheriting all those ancestors but I get a kick out of it.

You've done some astonishing research, any idea why the 1865 camp of the 50th PVI at Gettysburg?

For whatever reason the 50th was picked by Grant to represent the Army at the laying of the cornerstone for the National Monument on July 4th. They then returned to Washington and were mustered out on July 31.
